Botis Seva is a unique and seminal choreographic voice rooted in Hip Hop dance theatre but inspired by a freefrom approach to choreography. His work is grounded in real life and captures his own stories, as well as those around him, whilst borrowing techniques from film, text, art and other dance languages to continuously reinvent his approach to creativity and the stage.
Botis' passion from a young age was music, he’d spend time at his local youth club making beats and MC’ing. When he was 15 years old he was introduced to dance at secondary school and it was here Botis decided to pursue a choreographic career outside of mainstream educational pathways. He founded his Hip Hop dance theatre company Far From The Norm aged 19 in Dagenham, London, with friends that shared his passion for experimenting with the Hip Hop form.
In his early choreographic years, Botis honed his craft and skills through mentorship and artistic development opportunities with Breakin’ Convention at Sadler’s Wells, which gave him the confidence to apply for various platforms and slowly build up his language and portfolio.
From here, Botis’ work started to take flight across the stage, outdoor and dance film circuits. Since,he has been the recipient of numerous awards including Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund, Marion North Mentoring Award (2015), Copenhagen International Choreography Competition (2016), Choreography 30 Hannover (2016), Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production for BLKDOG (2019), nominations for Black British Theatre Award and Dance Critics National Dance Awards (2022), CHANEL Next Prize (2022) and Carmen Mateux Best Choreographer Award (2023).
Botis has also worked on numerous film commissions including Inside The Blind Iris with director Douglas Bernadt (2023), a collaboration with Director Freddie Leydon and Christies on Santo (2022), BBC Arts x Space CAN’T KILL US ALL (2020) and Channel 4 Random Acts REACH (2018). His film work has won Vimeo Best of the Year Awards (2023), Kinsale Sharks (2023), San Francisco Dance Film Festival (2018) and nominations include Cannes Lion Award (2023) and Young British Arrows (2023).
His other stage commissions include Scottish Dance Theatre, Rupert Goold, National Youth Dance Company, Wayne McGregor and Robin Friend, Battersea Arts Centre/Suri Krishnamma and upcoming commissions include Acosta Dance (2024/25) and NDT (2024/25).

À la croisée du théâtre et de la danse hip-hop, Botis Seva est un chorégraphe unique et visionnaire qui s’inspire d’une approche libre de la chorégraphie. Ses créations sont ancrées dans la vie réelle et puisent dans son expérience personnelle, ainsi que dans les histoires de son entourage, tout en empruntant des techniques aux langages du cinéma, de la littérature, de l’art et d’autres danses dans le but de réinventer à l’infini son approche de la créativité et de la scène.
Très jeune, Botis Seva se passionne pour la musique : il crée des rythmes et rappe dans le club de jeunes près de chez lui. À l’âge de 15 ans, il découvre la danse à l’école secondaire et décide de s’orienter vers une carrière de chorégraphe en marge des parcours de formation traditionnels. À 19 ans, il s’associe à des amis qui partagent sa passion pour l’exploration du hip-hop et fonde Far From The Norm, une compagnie de danse-théâtre hip-hop à Dagenham, près de Londres.
Il fait ses premières armes en tant que chorégraphe en perfectionnant son art et ses compétences grâce à des initiatives de mentorat et de développement artistique offertes par le programme Breakin’ Convention du Sadler’s Wells. Il acquiert ainsi la confiance nécessaire pour accéder à plusieurs plateformes et étoffer progressivement son langage et ses créations.
Son travail prend alors son envol au fil de représentations sur scène, de spectacles en plein air et de films de danse. Il a depuis reçu de nombreuses reconnaissances, dont le prix du Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund, le Marion North Mentoring Award (2015), le premier prix au Concours international de chorégraphie de Copenhague (2016) et au 30e Concours international de chorégraphie de Hanovre (2016) ainsi que le prix Olivier de la meilleure création en danse pour BLKDOG (2019). Il a par ailleurs été nommé aux Black British Theatre Awards et aux Dance Critics National Dance Awards (2022), et a obtenu le CHANEL Next Prize (2022) et le prix Carmen Mateu du meilleur chorégraphe (2023).
On lui a également confié plusieurs commandes pour des films, dont Inside The Blind Iris aux côtés du réalisateur Douglas Bernadt (2023), une collaboration avec le réalisateur Freddie Leyden et Christie’s sur Santo (2022), CAN’T KILL US ALL pour BBC Arts x Space (2020) et REACH dans le cadre de la série Random Acts de Channel 4 (2018). Ses travaux dans le monde du cinéma lui ont valu des prix aux Vimeo Best of the Year Awards (2023), aux Kinsale Shark Awards (2023) et au Festival du film de danse de San Francisco (2018) ainsi que des sélections aux prix Cannes Lions (2023) et Young British Arrows (2023), entre autres.
Parmi ses collaborations, on compte aussi des commandes pour la scène pour le Scottish Dance Theatre, Rupert Goold, la National Youth Dance Company, Wayne McGregor et Robin Friend ainsi que le Battersea Arts Centre et Suri Krishnamma.
