Artistic Director’s Notes
About fifteen years ago, Robert Chafe and I worked on a production that we kept saying was about death. We had experienced the deaths of several people close to us, and wanted to explore why it is that the ‘celebrations of life’ that we were attending felt so very neutral and ultimately empty. The ‘play about death’ we made wasn’t a successful one for us, though the artists involved put in a noble effort.
Environmentalist and scientist Jon Lien was concerned about the business of death too – namely in preventing it for the whales he saved. He also worked tirelessly to alleviate the burden on the environment and on the fishermen in whose nets the leviathans were caught. During our first run of the workshop production of Between Breaths in 2016, I watched the audience, as I often do. After the show, Robert said that we had finally made the show that says what we had always wanted to say about death. But watching the audience that night, I knew the play wasn’t about death at all, but about life; delicious, frightening, fierce and beautiful life, just like Jon Lien had lived it.

Playwright’s Notes
I was recently asked what was different and challenging about writing this play. For sure I’ve written about real people in the past and the research process has taken me into people’s homes all across the province and beyond. I’ve sat and recorded people talking about loved ones, telling intimate stories about real lives that have come and gone, and I’ve been gobsmacked by the generosity and trust. The big difference with Between Breaths was the timing. I approached the Lien family with idea of writing this play back in 2012, a mere two years after Jon’s passing. Despite their still fresh grief, Judy, Elling and their family opened their doors and their hearts to me, as did Jon’s colleagues and friends. They all did so with the firm intent that Jon’s great legacy continue to be celebrated. Beyond all else, I hope this play serves that purpose.
Between Breaths was developed with assistance from ArtsNL, St. John’s City Arts Jury, and the Banff Centre’s Playwrights Lab, 2015. My thanks to all those who lent their time and their stories to Between Breaths: Judy Lien, Elling Lien, OJ Lien, Wayne Ledwell, Wayne Barney, Peter Hennebury, Bill Montevechhi, Holly Hogan and Danielle Devereaux.

Artistic Fraud would like to dedicate this run of Between Breaths to our dramaturge Iris Turcott.
Together with Sarah Garton Stanley, Iris provided the clarity and backbone to our most celebrated works, including Afterimage and Oil and Water. She was a true hero of the Canadian theatre, always behind the scenes and rarely getting any of the credit. We counted ourselves lucky to have had her tireless passion and wisdom on our team. Iris passed away in September 2016. Between Breaths was to be the last play she helped us create.

Robert Chafe est un écrivain, enseignant, acteur et administrateur des arts basé à St. John’s, Ktaqmkuk (Terre-Neuve). Il a travaillé dans les domaines du théâtre, de la danse, de l’opéra, de la radio, de la fiction et du cinéma. Ses pièces de théâtre ont été présentées au Canada, au Royaume-Uni, en Australie et aux États-Unis. Metteure en scène primée de St. John’s, à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Jillian Keiley est la fondatrice de la compagnie de théâtre Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland. Elle a signé des mises en scène et enseigné partout au Canada, et elle a aussi travaillé à l’étranger. Titulaire d’un baccalauréat en Beaux-arts avec concentration en Théâtre de l’Université York, Mme Keiley a remporté le prestigieux prix Siminovitch (mise en scène) en 2004, ainsi que le prix John-Hirsch du Conseil des arts du Canada, et a reçu des doctorats honorifiques en Lettres de l’Université Memorial et de l’Université York. Jillian est entrée en poste comme directrice aretistique du Théâtre anglais du CNA en août 2012, et les productions qu’elle a mises en scène au CNA comprennent The Neverending Story, Between Breaths, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, A Christmas Carol, Twelfth Night, Metamorphoses: Based on the Myths of Ovid, Tartuffe, Oil and Water et Alice Through the Looking-Glass. Récemment, elle a mis en scène Bakkhai, The Diary of Anne Frank et As You Like It pour le Festival de Stratford, et ses productions de Tartuffe (CNA) et The Colony of Unrequited Dreams (Artistic Fraud) ont tourné à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Kellie Walsh est la fondatrice et la directrice artistique du Lady Cove Women’s Choir, lauréat de nombreux prix, et la directrice artistique du Shallaway Youth Choir, de renommée internationale. Elle a récemment cofondé le chœur de jeunes Inuits Ullûgiagatsuk du Nunatsiavut, au Labrador, et est la présidente sortante de l’organisme choral national, Choral Canada. Fière de ses racines profondes à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, elle a acquis une renommée internationale en utilisant le chant choral comme moyen d’explorer le développement de l’empathie, de l’identité socioculturelle et de l’engagement citoyen. Mme Walsh a travaillé dans tout le Canada, aux États-Unis, en Amérique du Sud, en Europe et en Asie, afin de promouvoir le chant choral comme moyen d’unir les gens et les cultures, de transcender la géographie et les contextes sociaux, politiques et économiques. Mme Walsh est convaincue que les arts peuvent jouer un rôle transformateur en façonnant l’avenir des communautés.
Sarah, alias SGS, est vice-présidente de la programmation d’Arts Commons à Calgary et codirectrice du légendaire Birchdale. Elle a également été productrice artistique du Fonds national de création du CNA. Dans le cadre de son doctorat en études culturelles à l’Université Queen’s, elle a créé Massey & Me: Conversations at the End of Theatre, une série de cinq événements de réflexion faisant référence aux conférences CBC Massey. Dans le cadre de cette réflexion critique, SGS explore les structures généalogiques, politiques et administratives qui régissent le théâtre professionnel au Canada.
SGS a cofondé le SpiderWebShow, le Festival of Live Digital Art (FOLDA) et le Baby Grand Theatre, en plus d’avoir été la première directrice artistique du Buddies in Bad Times et la première collaboratrice artistique du Festival de théâtre Magnetic North.
En 2022, elle a été nommée boursière Arne Bengt Johansson du Banff Forum, avant d’y retourner l’année suivante. Depuis peu, elle siège au conseil d’administration de l’Alberta Theatre et au Comité consultatif national du Fonds national de création du CNA, et fait partie du projet pilote de consultation en leadership du Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.

Originaire de Mount Pearl à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Brian Kenny est un concepteur de théâtre diplômé de l’École nationale de théâtre du Canada et du Collège Sheridan. Parmi ses collaborations, mentionnons : Come From Away in Concert (Mirvish et Marquis Ent.); Billy Elliott, The Rocky Horror Show, The Music Man, Little Shop of Horrors (Festival de Stratford); Elf, Grow, Mary Poppins (The Grand Theatre); Once (Centre Segal); Everybody Just C@lm The F#ck Down, Between Breaths, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams (Artistic Fraud, Terre-Neuve); Supper Club, Birthday Balloon (RCA Theatre). Brian est membre du conseil d’administration de la section locale 659 de l’AIEST, l’Association des designers canadiens.
Sharon King-Campbell est une artiste de théâtre et une écrivaine basée à Ktaqmkuk/Terre-Neuve. Avec Artistic Fraud depuis 2017, elle a signé la mise en scène de transVersing, et de cinq courts monologues dans The Imaginary Real, en plus d’aider à la mise en scène de Between Breaths. Elle a également travaillé comme metteuse en scène pour Bear & Co, Best Kind Productions, Grand Bank Regional Theatre, Stephenville Theatre Festival, New Curtain Theatre et Girl Power Inc., entre autres. Sharon est l’autrice de quatre pièces de théâtre et d’un recueil de poésie. Elle prépare actuellement un doctorat à l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve. Patrick Foran est un homme de théâtre de John’s (T.-N.) qui a produit plusieurs spectacles d’Artistic Fraud, dont Under Wraps, Oil & Water, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, Between Breaths, transVersing, The Other Side of This et The Imaginary Real. Patrick a contribué à la vie culturelle communautaire en participant à la création du St. John’s Short Play Festival et de l’Association de théâtre professionnel de Terre-Neuve. Comme acteur, Patrick a travaillé avec des compagnies de théâtre de Terre-Neuve et de l’Ontario, et il est codirecteur artistique du Double Sure Theatre de St. John’s. Il est diplômé de la Faculté d’administration des affaires de l’Université Memorial et de la George Brown Theatre School.
