Through the NAC Free Rein residency program, collaborative pianist Ria Kim and I participated in the Banff Centre Evolution: Classical 2021. During Evolution: Classical, Ria and I were fortunate to receive valuable feedback in coachings with acclaimed vocalists, instrumentalists and stage directors from across North America and Europe including Dinuk Wijeratne, Edwin Huizinga and Suzie LeBlanc. The experience of creating a recital concept and learning how to program, produce and bring a project to fruition under the guidance of some incredible mentors, has been exceptionally rewarding. The creative freedom provided by EC allowed us to commission a new work by two young Canadian artists; poet Yi Nuo Cheng and composer Vivian Kwok. This work, entitled Venus, will receive its world premiere in our recital, Feminine Endings, on August 14th at 8:15 EST/9:15 ADT. The performance, which is a co-production with the Scotia Festival of Music in Halifax, NS, would not have been possible without the support of the NAC 2021 residency program.
