The brilliant Norwegian choreographer and theatre artist Alan Lucien Øyen – who, as the son of a dresser, grew up in the theatre –  brings to us a poignant work about the relationship between truth and lies. Story, story, die., a title that refers to a strict game of listening, explores how humans create new narratives to better protect themselves from sometimes harsh realities. Through engaging solos, duets, and group pastiches, we come to “know” the individuals’ stories – or do we? As a creator in high demand, Alan can be found in opera houses, theatres, and on film sets collaborating with the finest artists of today, where his original voice shapes productions of great emotional and dramatic richness. This is the company’s first appearance at the National Arts Centre and the Canadian premiere of this work.

Enjoy!

Ambassador’s Note

As the Norwegian Ambassador to Canada, it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to tonight’s performance, Story, story die. by winter guests and the acclaimed choreographer and director, Alan Lucien Øyen. The production is presented by the NAC in partnership with Nordic Bridges – a yearlong cultural collaboration between the Nordic region and Canada, taking place from coast to coast to coast throughout 2022. It is exciting to see so many creative partnerships forming and cultural collaboration taking place, and I look forward to attending upcoming events in Ottawa and elsewhere this year. I hope you will too!

Story, story, die.

Love me.

Alan Lucien Øyen and his company winter guests tell stories of the contemporary world. Drawing from real life experiences, his innovative multidisciplinary works of dance and theatre have gained critical acclaim and an international following. His newest work Story, story, die. is no exception – with a cast of 7 extraordinary dancers – Story, story, die. looks at the interdependency between lies and love: The things we do to be liked. It explores how we are constantly re-arranging everyday life in an attempt to craft a desirable narrative – how we "lie" about ourselves and stage reality for each other - as we meet in life or through social media. Relentlessly seeking approval – a fast and fading "conditional" love, dependent on success and happiness. Using visceral choreography, intertwined with poignant text and Øyen's renowned cinematic staging – the audience is left breathless. Alan Lucien Øyen works in close collaborations with the performers – not only when developing the choreography, but also when developing topic and text. The personal stories of the artists involved dictate the ongoing discourse in the studio. The piece incorporates the individual narratives so the performance and the artists speak from a point of truth.

What distinguishes Øyen is his grand approach and his monumental performances in which he often mixes dance with film and new technology. Impressive and theatrical, in which the dance itself does not lose its power. It is powerful and virtuoso, performed by dancers who seem to be able to do everything from classical to hip-hop. Øyen does not have it of the least: he danced with Carte Blanche and Amanda K. Miller's Pretty Ugly Dance Company and has been leading his own company of winter guests for thirteen years now. Julidans is not the only one who has him in his sights. Øyen was one of the first choreographers who, after the death of dance legend Pina Bausch, was invited by her Tanztheater Wuppertal to create a new work for them – a great honour.

winter guests

winter guests is an international touring company performing works by Alan Lucien Øyen. They uniquely create a range of pure theatre works, dance works and hybrid pieces – all layered with a cinematic overtone enriched by stunning singular scenography. The works are based on real life experiences, sourcing material from interactions with strangers, personal anecdotes, and pop culture references – always incorporating the performers and the rehearsal process in the shaping of the final narrative.

Alan is also substantially invited to choreograph and direct for companies internationally. In 2018, he was the first choreographer commissioned to create a full-length piece for Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
