About the company

“2019 marks the year that Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) began 60 years ago. For us, this is a time to reflect on our humble beginnings, to celebrate the creative geniuses that have graced our stages with their artistic prowess, to underline our evolution which has turned NDT into a collection of exceptionally gifted artists today.”

Paul Lightfoot, Artistic Director, NDT

Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies, under artistic guidance of choreographer Paul Lightfoot. The Dutch troupe is based in The Hague, and performs for over 150.000 visitors in Europe as well as in the United States, Asia and Australia. Since its foundation in 1959, this rebellious pioneering company has built a rich repertoire of over 650 ballets, by master choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, renowned house choreographers Sol León & Paul Lightfoot, associate choreographers Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke and high-profile guests such as Johan Inger, Medhi Walerski, Alexander Ekman, Gabriela Carrizo, Franck Chartier, Hofesh Shechter, Edward Clug, and Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar.

The main company, NDT 1, consists of 25 phenomenal dancers from all over the world, varying in age from 23 to 41 years old. Each one of them excelling in their solo qualities. “When you put your heart on the table, be ready to have it crashed. It’s when life breaks in, a stream of pain, passion, sensation… everything for sensation… we want to feel, we want to live, we want to push far into the suffering, the beauty, the vodka, the tv, the dance routines. Fuck poetry, only Vladimir can save us.”
– Hofesh Shechter

The Statement is a wedge of realism; cold and current. We recognize both the characters and the language as being of our world and our time. The Statement is a one-act play, with four characters locked in their own battle for control, and with the morality of their actions: they have been tasked with fueling a conflict in a distant country. Character “A” declares: “For generations they’ve been fighting. All we did was use it. We used it as an opportunity – the attacks – for investment. For growth. We used it.” Now, being asked to take responsibility for their actions in order to exonerate their superiors, a conflict is rising within their department.
– Crystal Pite

Singulière Odyssée

By Sol León & Paul Lightfoot | Pour Gérard Lemaître | Duration: 34 minutes

Singulière Odyssée by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot is symbolic of the choreographers’ awareness of how the predominance of travel, of moving and of living in an everlasting state of flux has carried through the DNA of our times. The piece is set in a train station based on the art deco waiting room of Basel’s Central Station. Dancers come and go as passersby in transit with the exception of one character who lingers in waiting and watches travelers go by and come back, in a moment frozen in time. For this piece, the music, titled Exiles, has been especially composed by none other than Max Richter.

SOL LÉON & PAUL LIGHTFOOT | Choreographers

Sol León (Spain) and Paul Lightfoot (England) started creating as a duo for Nederlands Dans Theater in 1989. Since then they have created more than 50 pieces for the company. In 2002, they were appointed house choreographers for NDT. Together they have won prestigious awards, such as the Benois de la Danse and the Herald Archangel.

Sol León joined NDT 2 after graduating from the National Ballet Academy of Madrid in 1987. Two years later she joined NDT 1 and danced masterpieces of Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek and Ohad Naharin. She continued to dance up until 2003, when she decided to fully devote herself to choreography. León became Artistic Advisor for NDT in 2012.

Paul Lightfoot studied at the Royal Ballet School in London. In 1985 he joined NDT 2 and moved to NDT 1 two years later, where he danced until 2008. During his dancing career, Lightfoot started choreographing and together with Sol León he created many pieces for NDT. Lightfoot became NDT’s Artistic Director in 2011. This season is Lightfoot’s final season as Artistic Director.
