As the heir to the famous Farruco dynasty in Spain, Farruquito is hailed as nothing short of a superstar. Critics have found it impossible to describe his performances without resorting to multiple superlatives: Explosive! Fiery! Astounding! A leading interpreter of “puro” Gypsy flamenco—a distinctive tradition that eschews more recent trends—he commands the stage with unparalleled prowess. In the eponymous Farruquito, his NAC debut, he is joined by musicians, dancers and...

It’s such an honour to bring to Ottawa a vast world of dance, shaped by some of the most gifted and innovative artists working across a broad spectrum of styles and influences. As we continue to search out the best and brightest dance companies to present to you, our wonderfully receptive and enthusiastic audience, we invite you to explore the new and the familiar on this extraordinary journey of life in motion!

Growing up in the most renowned Gypsy flamenco dynasty, Farruquito watched from the wings from the age of four, only to join his family for the nightly finale onstage. He quickly made it his life’s mission to share what he considered the purest form of flamenco on stages and screens around the world, inheriting the mantle from his famous grandfather, El Farruco. We are all in for a charismatic and virtuosic treat as Farruquito is joined on stage by 11 dancers and musicians in his first Ottawa performance.

NAC Dance is honoured to bring you these performances on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Nation, and we gratefully acknowledge them as the past, present, and future stewards of this land. Enjoy!

Word from Farruquito

With this new performance, I will unveil my most personal side – staying true to traditional roots, while also presenting the current state of Flamenco, as I see it. I will revive the best moments from past performances while integrating new creations, always maintaining that special energy. With the presence of the Bailaoras (female Flamenco dancers), we will capture the pure Gypsy essence present in so many real-life moments with family, at weddings and other celebrations. This is something that cannot be taught in a studio, it is learned through real-life experiences. I will also show improvisation, the origin of Flamenco, without losing sight of the overall choreographic structure of the show. Both of these elements are a part of my learning process. I am constantly pulling inspiration from the different periods of Flamenco that I have had the luck of witnessing in my life, along with the irreplaceable influence of Flamenco song and guitar. I will unveil my creative process and role as both musician and dancer. This performance is an original creation of music, lyrics and choreography. Song, guitar, percussion – each musician plays a crucial role in this creation as a soloist, not mere accompaniment – every person who sings, plays an instrument or dances is a protagonist in this show. All of them unite, like the beautiful coloured threads that come together to create the spectacular shawl of Flamenco.

Within moments, he proved that he is one of today’s superlative dance artists…. I’ve never seen any flamenco dancer with such dynamic variety, or one who so connects the macro to the micro… Farruquito dances as if he has every answer at his fingertips… His legs and feet display endless resources…. He has surprise, fantasy, glamour, pride and glee.
