Alonzo King has been a beacon for contemporary ballet in the US and beyond for over 35 years; a visionary choreographer and director who continues to inspire his dancers, collaborators and audiences wherever the company performs. FUN FACTS!

Alonzo King was born in Georgia to civil-rights activists Slater King and Valencia King Nelson.

Though LINES Ballet and Kronos Quartet are both San Francisco-based companies, they only just premiered their first-ever collaboration, to great acclaim.

King recently made a work, Biophony, to the score of animal sounds created by musician and soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause.

“The term LINES alludes to all that is visible in the phenomenal world. There is nothing that is made or formed without a line. Straight and Circle encompass all that we see. Whatever can be seen is formed by a line. In mathematics it is a straight or curved continuous extent of length without breadth. Lines are in our fingerprints, the shapes of our bodies, constellations, geometry. It implies genealogical connection, progeny and spoken word. It marks the starting point and finish. It addresses direction, communication, and design. A line of thought. A boundary or eternity. A melodic line. The equator. From vibration or dot to dot it is the visible organization of what we see.”

— Alonzo King

SUTRA

Sutra means string or thread; that which sews and holds things together. The word is related to two Sanskrit words suci, meaning “needle,” and suna meaning “woven.” A sutra is a treatise or theorem condensed into a few words.

Ekam sat — only One exists. In the Vedas the cosmos is said to evolve like a spider’s web out of God’s being. The Lord is the Divine Thread (Sutra) or unifying essence running through all experiences and all expressions of life and matter.

— Yogananda from God Talks With Arjuna
