The National Orchestra of Korea, founded in 1995, is a resident company of the National Theater of Korea. The NOK captivates global audiences by creating contemporary music and delivering high-quality performances. Composed of traditional Korean instruments that have been developed and preserved over a long history, the NOK continues to plan, develop, and present unique concerts. These concerts feature contemporary reinterpretations of traditional music, sounds that embody Korean spirit and identity, and a distinctive repertoire that appeals to audiences worldwide. To stage performances befitting that of a national arts company - enjoyable to all while showcasing the NOK’s unique identity - they tirelessly meet the challenge of creating works that link the past, present and future.
Chae Chi-sung is the artistic director of the National Orchestra of Korea. He studied traditional Korean music at Seoul National University, pursued conducting at the graduate school of Chung-Ang University, and completed a doctoral course at the graduate school of Hanyang University. Through open recruitment, he was selected as a producer at the Korean broadcaster KBS for 15 years. He moved to the Gugak Broadcasting Foundation at its inception, where he worked as the head of the programming team, director of the headquarters, and president. During his tenure, he significantly expanded and developed the Gugak Broadcasting Foundation into a national platform. Additionally, he served as the assistant conductor of the KBS Traditional Music Orchestra. He won the Korean National Composition Awards and KBS Traditional Music Awards in the composition category. He was also appointed as the director of various traditional music festivals. He has actively contributed to the development and popularization of traditional Korean music.
Carole Anne Roussel is a laureate of the 2023 Queen Elisabeth Competition and the 2021 winner of the Prix d’Europe. She is currently an Associate Artist at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. She also served as a soloist at the following companies: Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Opéra de Québec, Orchestre Royal de chambre de Wallonie, La Monnaie Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de l'Estuaire, and Appassionato.
Internationally acclaimed violinist Timothy Chooi, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and Juilliard School, earned Second Prize at the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition and has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon. He is a Professor of Violin at the University of Ottawa and creates engaging videos that cover everything from music education to lifestyle and reviews, aiming to connect audiences with the world of music and has been featured on MediciTV, ABC News, and WQXR New York.
Jang Seo-yoon earned a master’s degree in musicology at Seoul National University and is pursuing a doctorate. She won the gold prize in the pansori category at the 27th Dong-A Korean Music Competition, and the prize for young women artists offered by a Korean newspaper ‘Women News’ in 2023. With pansori and the cheolhyeongeum – a traditional Korean string instrument - she is active in a variety of fields, including traditional Korean music and creative music collaboration with Korean and international artists.
