Violinist Clara-Jumi Kang is an artist of supreme musicality, impeccable refinement, and poise, as borne out by the many awards and accolades she has received since she won first prize at the Indianapolis International Violin Competition in 2010, Sendai Violin Competition also in 2010, and the Seoul Violin Competition in 2009. Her cycle of Beethoven Violin Sonatas with pianist Sunwook Kim which was released on Accentus last season has received outstanding reviews and nominations.
Highlights of the 2023–2024 season include her Edinburgh Festival solo recital debut, as well as debuts with the Israel Philharmonic as part of the Côte-Saint-André Festival under Music Director Lahav Shani, with whom she will also make her Budapest Festival Orchestra debut, the LA Philharmonic as part of the Hollywood Bowl Festival, and the Cincinnati and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. Kang will also tour South Korea with the Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Myung-whun Chung. As a recitalist, Kang regularly performs at the world’s most prestigious halls, and will make her Wigmore Hall debut next season, and return to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées for two concerts.

Born in Germany to a musical family, Clara-Jumi Kang took up the violin at the age of three and was awarded a full scholarship to The Julliard School at the age of seven to study with Dorothy Delay. She received her Bachelor and Masters degrees from the Korean National University of Arts under Nam-Yun Kim before completing her studies at the Munich Musikhochschule with Christoph Poppen.

A summer holiday in the Bohemian countryside inspired Antonín Dvořák to compose his tranquil Eighth Symphony, where the composer weaves the traditions of Czech folk music with his own romantic melodies to evoke the beauty of his surroundings. Although this is a work of abstract music (meaning it doesn't tell a specific story), listen closely and you'll hear the enchanting sounds of summer — from beautiful birdsong to the echoes of a shepherd's horn and even a rumbling thunderstorm.
Ludwig van Beethoven's only concerto for solo violin and orchestra offers its own moments of pastoral poetry. Performed by soloist Clara-Jumi Kang — who brings "poise, gentleness, and warmth" (The Strad) to every moment — Beethoven's mix of delicate lyricism and foot-stomping country dances will immediately transport you to sun-streaked meadows.
And opening the program is Andrea Tarrodi's Lucioles, a work of shimmering orchestral colors and heavenly harmonies that depicts the mesmerizing flight of fireflies across the midnight sky.
