Three things to know ...

  • Music of fire and ice evokes vast, snow-capped vistas in this program of Nordic and Russian works conducted by Christian Reif.
  • Explore the lush music of Jean Sibelius with his Violin Concerto — inspired by his teenage dreams of being a violin virtuoso — and epic final symphony.
  • Musical styles from the 18th and 20th centuries collide in Sergei Prokofiev's playful "Classical" Symphony.

Hailed as a national treasure in Finland during his lifetime, Jean Sibelius's music has become synonymous with the country's icy landscapes and the warmth of its people.

A deeply personal work for the composer, Sibelius's Violin Concerto gives voice to his youthful dreams of becoming a violin virtuoso. Experience the work's emotional journey from melancholy to intense joy when NAC favorite Karen Gomyo — whose performances "pour out of her with an unbroken wave of controlled energy" (Times) — returns to Southam Hall.

One of Sibelius's final works, the Seventh Symphony embodies a titanic, swirling energy that one critic likened to "the dignified calm of a human spirit in a hostile environment."

Sergei Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony pays tribute to Haydn and Mozart in a mash-up that mixes the sparkling elegance of 18th-century music with the young Russian composer's signature brand of bold modernism.

And Lil Lacy's Aurora — inspired by a Staffan Nihlen sculpture of the Roman goddess of dawn — moves from darkness to light, culminating in a radiant sunrise symbolizing the hope of a new day.
