The paranoid and cruel sultan Shahryar has a bad habit of marrying then murdering a different bride every night—until a beautiful and well-read woman named Scheherazade tricks the obsessive ruler and saves her own life by enchanting him with stories that last 1001 nights.
Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade captures the passion of the Middle Eastern tale One Thousand and One Nights by weaving a musical tapestry that includes characters like Aladdin, Ali Babba, and Sinbad the Sailor, but Rimsky-Korsakov named his epic orchestral work after the true star of the fable—the wise and wily Scheherazade, a gifted and enigmatic storyteller.
Russian composer Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky had just fled a short and ill-fated marriage when he wrote his Violin Concerto,which was panned by critics when it finally premiered in Vienna. He went to his grave never knowing that it would be cherished by solo concert violinists the world over. Canadian violinist Blake Pouliot, a classical music phenomenon who last appeared with NACO during its 2022 Truth in our Time tour, returns to the NAC to perform Tchaikovsky’s one and only violin concerto.
The music of Iranian American composer Gity Razaz has been called “ravishing and engulfing throughout” (The New York Times) and her works have been commissioned by orchestras, concert soloists, choreographers, and others around the world, all eager to perform her music. The NAC Orchestra is pleased to present the Canadian premiere of Razaz’s newest work for orchestra, Methuselah (In Chains of Time), commissioned by the League of American Orchestras with the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
Alexander Shelley succeeded Pinchas Zukerman as Music Director of Canada’s NAC Orchestra in September 2015. The ensemble has since been praised as being “transformed... hungry, bold, and unleashed” (Ottawa Citizen) and Shelley’s programming credited for turning the orchestra into “one of the more audacious in North America” (Maclean’s).
Shelley is a champion of Canadian creation; recent hallmarks include the multimedia projects Life Reflected and UNDISRUPTED,and three major new ballets in partnership with NAC Dance for Encount3rs. He is passionate about arts education and nurturing the next generation of musicians. He is an Ambassador for Ottawa’s OrKidstra, a charitable social development program that teaches children life skills through making music together.
Alexander Shelley is also the Principal Associate Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and, starting with the 2024–2025 season, Artistic and Music Director of Artis-Naples and the Naples Philharmonic in Florida, USA. In the spring of 2019, he led the NAC Orchestra on its critically acclaimed 50th Anniversary European tour, and in 2017, he led the Orchestra in a tour across Canada, celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary. Most recently, he led the Orchestra in its first performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 30 years.
He has made eight recordings with the NAC Orchestra, including the JUNO-nominated New Worlds, Life Reflected, ENCOUNT3RS, The Bounds of Our Dreams, and the acclaimed Clara, Robert, Johannes four-album series, all with Canadian label Analekta.

Described as “immaculate, at once refined and impassioned” (Arts Atlanta), violinist Blake Pouliot (pool-YACHT) has anchored himself among the ranks of classical phenoms. A tenacious young artist with a passion that enraptures his audience in every performance, Pouliot has established himself as “one of those special talents that comes along once in a lifetime” (Toronto Star).
Blake Pouliot’s 2023–2024 symphonic highlights include appearances with Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Artis-Naples, the NAC Orchestra, and Orchestre symphonique de Québec, among others. In Europe this season, Pouliot makes his Spanish debut with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Spain at the Teatro Monumental in Madrid, performing Tchaikovsky’s Violon Concerto with Rossen Milanov as well as playing and directing Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons in a separate chamber program. As a chamber musician, Pouliot returns to the NAC, Aspen Music Festival, and La Jolla Summerfest where he performed the festival-opening concert last year with conductor Alan Gilbert. He also returns to the National Youth Orchestra of Canada for his third consecutive year as Artist-in-Residence.
During his time as Soloist-in-Residence of Orchestre Métropolitain in 2020–2021, Pouliot and Yannick Nézet-Séguin performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 and Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons which led to Pouliot’s 2022 debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra, performing John Corigliano’s The Red Violin (Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra) with Nézet-Séguin. Pouliot won the Grand Prize at the 2016 Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Manulife Competition and was named First Laureate of both the 2018 and 2015 Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.
Pouliot released his debut album of 20th-century French music on Analekta Records in 2019 to critical acclaim, including a five-star rating from BBC MusicMagazine and a 2019 JUNO nomination for Best Classical Album.
Pouliot performs on the 1729 Guarneri del Gesù on generous loan from an anonymous donor.

Her music has been commissioned and/or performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, San Diego Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, National Sawdust, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, former cellist of the Kronos Quartet Jeffrey Zeigler, cellist Inbal Segev, violinist Jennifer Koh, violinist Francesca dePasquale, and Metropolis Ensemble, among others.
Programming highlights include a world premiere with the San Diego Symphony under the direction of Rafael Payare, a commission for MacArthur Award–winning cellist Alisa Weilerstein and her ground-breaking project “Fragments,” a commission from BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sakari Oramo for the prestigious Last Night of the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall, a song cycle for Israeli Chamber Project and Grammy Award–winning tenor Karim Sulayman, and an upcoming concerto for world-renowned flautist Sharon Bezaly and London’s Wigmore Soloists. Other commissions have included a full-length ballet for Ballet Moscow, which still receives regular performances ever since its 2017 world premiere in Moscow, and her first short opera commissioned by Washington National Opera and premiered at the Kennedy Center. Her compositions have earned numerous awards, such as the Andrew Imbrie Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters that is “is given to a composer of demonstrated artistic merit in mid-career.”
Gity Razaz’s debut album, The Strange Highway, which was recently released on Sweden’s preeminent BIS Records, has garnered international praise. As described by BBC Music Magazine, “There’s an uncompromising beauty to these works by the Iranian-born American composer, the opening title work, for cello octet, is a wild rhythmic ride, while the closing Metamorphosis of Narcissus offers some fantastic musical storytelling. Impressive.”
Gity Razaz attended The Juilliard School on full scholarship, and received her Bachelor and Master of Music in Composition under the tutelage of Samuel Adler, Robert Beaser, and John Corigliano.

Alexander Shelley began his tenure as Music Director in 2015, following Pinchas Zukerman’s 16 seasons at the helm. Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and former Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra (2009–2017), he has been in demand around the world, conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic, DSO Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Stockholm Philharmonic, among others, and maintains a regular relationship with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and the German National Youth Orchestra.

Tobi Hunt McCoy is enjoying another year as Season Stage Manager with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. In past seasons, she stage-managed Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Christopher Plummer in 2001 and Colm Feore in 2014. She co-produced the 1940s Pops show On the Air with Jack Everly for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, a show they co-produced in 2007 for the NAC Orchestra.
In 2018 McCoy made her Southam Hall acting debut in the role of Stage Manager in the Magic Circle Mime Co.’s production of Orchestra from Planet X. Additional professional duties have included aiding Susanna and the Countess in schooling the Count and Figaro on the finer points of marital love during The Marriage of Figaro, keeping her eyes open (for the first time ever) during the flying monkey scene in The Wizard of Oz, mistakenly asking Patrick Watson for proof of identity backstage, holding her breath while marvelling at the athletic ability of the cast during Cirque Goes Broadway, continuing to implement feedback on her British-Columbian French with the choruses of Ottawa, and cheering on Luke and Princess Leia with Charlie Ross, Émilie Fournier, and Eric Osner during the Star Wars Pops concert.
In her spare time, McCoy is the Head of Arts, Drama, English, and Library at Lisgar Collegiate Institute.

En 2018, McCoy a fait ses débuts de comédienne à la Salle Southam en jouant son propre rôle dans L’Orchestre de la planète X de la Magic Circle Mime Co. Comme régisseuse, elle a fait un peu de tout : aidé Suzanne et la comtesse à expliquer les subtilités de l’amour conjugal au comte et à Figaro dans Les Noces de Figaro; gardé les yeux ouverts (pour la première fois de sa vie) pendant la scène des singes volants dans le Magicien d’Oz; demandé (par erreur!) à Patrick Watson de montrer une pièce d’identité en coulisses; retenu son souffle devant les prouesses des acrobates du Cirque à Broadway; continué d’exercer son français de la Colombie-Britannique grâce aux conseils des choristes d’Ottawa et acclamé Luke et la princesse Leia avec Charlie Ross, Émilie Fournier et Erik Ochsner dans le cadre du concert Pops Star Wars.
Dans son temps libre, elle s’occupe du département d’arts, d’anglais, de théâtre et de techniques de documentation au Lisgar Collegiate Institute.
