Hornist Corine Chartré-Lefebvre speaks about the NAC Orchestra Mentorship Program for young professionals
Corine Chartré-Lefebvre has played with several Québec orchestras and is currently the principal horn with the Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil in Québec. She is also fourth horn in the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières. The horns in the NACO Mentorship Program rotated within their section, and Corine worked closely with both principal horn Lawrence Vine and second horn Elizabeth Simpson.

Corine Chartré-Lefebvre studied with Nadia Côté at the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec, where she was awarded a prize with great distinction and obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. She went on to perfect her skills at the Musik Hochschule in Stuttgart under Professor Christian Lampert and at the Université de Montréal under Louis-Philippe Marsolais.
A versatile musician, Corine had the opportunity to play early in her career as an additional musician with several Quebec orchestras, including the Orchestre des Grands Ballets Canadiens, the I Musici Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre Métropolitain, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Les Violons du Roy and the National Jazz Orchestra of Canada. She is currently principal horn with the Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil and fourth horn with the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières.
Diplômée du Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec dans la classe de Nadia Côté, Corine Chartré-Lefebvre obtient un prix avec grande distinction en plus d’un baccalauréat ainsi qu’une maitrise. Elle se perfectionne ensuite à la Musik Hochschule de Stuttgart sous la tutelle Christian Lampert ainsi qu’à l’Université de Montréal dans la classe de Louis-Philippe Marsolais.

Elle occupe présentement le poste de cor solo à l’Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil et celui de quatrième cor à l’Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières.
Principal Horn with the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 2002, Lawrence Vine has also served as Principal Horn with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.
A much sought-after chamber musician, Lawrence has performed with Andrew Dawes, Lynn Harrell, Joseph Kalichstein, Anton Kuerti, Malcolm Lowe, Menahem Pressler, Pascal Rogé, David Schifrin, Joseph Silverstein, and Pinchas Zukerman. He regularly performs at home and on tour with the National Arts Centre Wind Quintet, a highly acclaimed ensemble that has recorded for the Naxos label.
As a soloist, he has appeared with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra. His festival credits include the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, Cleveland’s Kent/Blossom Music, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival and Ottawa's Music and Beyond Festival.
An active teacher and clinician, Lawrence is proud to teach the horn studio at the University of Ottawa's School of Music. He previously taught at the University of Manitoba, and has presented masterclasses at the Manhattan School of Music, Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory, Chicago’s Roosevelt University, Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University, and the Universities of Colorado, Toronto, British Columbia, Calgary and Victoria. He also serves on the faculty of the NAC Summer Music Institute.
The Toronto Globe and Mail has praised his “fine, burnished playing”; the Winnipeg Free Press commended his “delicate phrasing, rounded tone, and sense of poise”; the Ottawa Citizen enthused that his “playing was assured, and his clear sound was remarkably subtle”; and the Montreal Gazette described his playing as “radiant”.
Cor solo de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis 2002, Lawrence Vine a déjà occupé ce même poste au sein de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Calgary, de l’Orchestre symphonique de Winnipeg et du Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.
Chambriste très apprécié, il a partagé la scène avec Andrew Dawes, Lynn Harrell, Joseph Kalichstein, Anton Kuerti, Malcolm Lowe, Menahem Pressler, Pascal Rogé, David Schifrin, Joseph Silverstein et Pinchas Zukerman. Il se produit régulièrement, à Ottawa et en tournée, avec le Quintette à vent du Centre national des Arts, un ensemble très applaudi qu’on retrouve sous étiquette Naxos.

Il a aussi joué dans de nombreux festivals, notamment au Festival de musique de chambre de Santa Fe, au Banff Centre for Fine Arts, au Kent/Blossom Music de Cleveland, au Festival international de musique de chambre d’Ottawa et au Festival Musique et autres mondes d’Ottawa.
Très actif comme professeur et animateur d’ateliers, il enseigne le cor à l’Université d’Ottawa. Il a aussi enseigné à l’Université du Manitoba et a donné des classes de maître à la Manhattan School of Music, au Peabody Conservatory de Baltimore, à l’Université Roosevelt de Chicago, au Conservatoire royal de musique de Toronto, à l’Université Wilfrid Laurier et aux universités du Colorado, de Toronto, de la Colombie-Britannique, de Calgary et de Victoria. Il fait par ailleurs partie du corps professoral de l’Institut estival de musique du CNA.
Le Globe and Mail de Toronto a vanté son « jeu magnifique et brillant »; le Winnipeg Free Press a souligné « son phrasé délicat, sa sonorité ronde et son sens de l’équilibre »; l’Ottawa Citizen a applaudi « son jeu plein d’assurance, et sa sonorité claire et remarquablement subtile »; et The Gazette de Montréal a qualifié son jeu de « radieux ».
Having lived in Ottawa most of her life, Elizabeth is thrilled to be part of an Orchestra she has admired for many years.
Elizabeth has been the Second horn player since 2011, and has performed regularly in the horn section since 1986.
Elizabeth attained a Bachelor of Music in Education from the University of Ottawa and a Masters in Music Performance from Indiana University. She studied with many renowned players including Daniel Gress, Philip Farkas, Meir Rimon, Michael Hatfield, and Arnold Jacobs. While studying, Elizabeth received the Ottawa Music Festival Senior Scholarship in 1983, and the NACO Bursary in 1984.
Elizabeth was a founding member of the Bel Canto Wind Quintet, which ran a successful concert series in Ottawa for eleven years. This chamber ensemble also toured in Ontario and Quebec, and was often heard on CBC Radio, Radio Canada and in the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival.
Elizabeth is also a member of the Capital Brass Works. This entertaining thirteen member brass and percussion ensemble performed on its own self run concert series in Ottawa, toured in Ontario and has recorded three CD’s to date.
Elizabeth has enjoyed teaching for many institutions in Ottawa including the University of Ottawa, Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy, and Canterbury School of the Arts.
In 2013, Elizabeth Simpson co-created the NAC’s Music Circle, a music program for children, teens and adults with special needs. This program introduces orchestral instruments and the joy of live music, through workshops and a sensory friendly concert.
Elizabeth has worked with students at the OCDSB, CHEO, and the Lotus Centre, and with adults in the LIFE programs.
Elizabeth Simpson, qui a passé la majeure partie de sa vie à Ottawa, est fière d’évoluer au sein de l’orchestre qu’elle a admiré pendant de nombreuses années. Elle occupe officiellement le poste de deuxième cor depuis 2011, mais elle joue régulièrement dans la section des cors depuis 1986.
Mme Simpson a obtenu son baccalauréat en éducation musicale de l’Université d’Ottawa et sa maîtrise en interprétation musicale de l’Université de l’Indiana. Elle a été l’élève d’un grand nombre d’interprètes réputés, dont Daniel Gress, Philip Farkas, Meir Rimon, Michael Hatfield et Arnold Jacobs. Pendant ses études, elle a reçu la bourse du Festival de musique d’Ottawa en 1983 et la bourse de l’Orchestre du CNA en 1984.
Elle a été membre fondatrice du Quintette à vent Bel Canto, qui a présenté pendant onze ans une série de concerts couronnée de succès à Ottawa. Cet ensemble de chambre a également fait des tournées en Ontario et au Québec, et on a pu l’entendre souvent sur les ondes de CBC Radio et de Radio-Canada, ainsi qu’au Festival international de musique de chambre d’Ottawa.
Elle fait de plus partie de Capital Brass Works. Ce divertissant ensemble de cuivres et de percussions de 13 membres a présenté sa propre série de concerts à Ottawa, s’est produit en tournée en Ontario et a trois CD à son actif.
Mme Simpson garde de bons souvenirs de ses expériences d’enseignement dans de nombreux établissements d’Ottawa, dont l’Université d’Ottawa, l’Académie des orchestres de jeunes d’Ottawa et la Canterbury School of the Arts.
En 2013, Mme Simpson a été l’une des créatrices du Cercle musical du CNA, un programme d’éducation musicale destiné aux enfants, adolescents et adultes ayant des besoins particuliers. À travers des ateliers et un concert adapté aux sensibilités sensorielles, le Cercle musical offre une initiation aux instruments d’orchestre et au plaisir de vivre la musique en direct.
Mme Simpson œuvre auprès des élèves du OCDSB, du CHEO et du Lotus Centre, ainsi que des adultes des programmes LIFE.
