“A gift to the trumpet repertoire”

John Estacio’s concerto gets NAC premiere with Karen Donnelly

Karen Donnelly, who’s been the NAC Orchestra’s Principal Trumpet since 1999, will be the featured soloist for the Southam Hall premiere of Canadian composer John Estacio’s Trumpet Concerto in performances on November 27 and 28.

A consortium of 19 Canadian orchestras – including the NAC Orchestra – commissioned Estacio’s work in 2017, a nationwide project in honour of the country’s 150th birthday.

That year, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, with Larry Larson as soloist, gave the world premiere. Donnelly says it continues to be programmed by orchestras across the country and beyond. “Almost every single Canadian orchestra and Canadian trumpet player has played this concerto. This music has been on my stand since 2017! I’m excited to finally bring these notes to life.”

Donnelly adds that Estacio’s concerto is a “gift to the trumpet repertoire” and a piece with an enduring legacy. “I think it’s going to have a very long life, for not only Canadian trumpet players but trumpet players around the world. This piece is a gift for us. It’s beautiful.”
