Ages 9 and up – One apple core, two wigs, three garlands, four party hats, five stories, six songs and a drum! That’s all it takes to create a joyful tribute to all those who have left us, with a special nod and a wink to grandmothers who are right there, dancing on our hearts. A delectable boule d’amour.

Dear Granny Jacqueline,

Today I went to the theatre with my class. It was Mrs. Guérin’s idea. At first I thought we were at the wrong show. The play was about Koko, a lady gorilla who learned sign language and took care of a kitten. Mammifères, was that the title? I didn’t really get the connection to the story of the grands-mères mortes, the dead grannies. So like Koko, I’m speaking sign language to Mrs. Guérin.

And finally I got it. I realized that Koko and her cat were just an excuse to talk about Solange, Lucille, Thérèse and all those who have left us, and that with stories (and also songs) Karine was releasing happy hormones to warm our hearts.

The apple cores, the wigs, the garlands, the party hats and Nicolas’ drum… all that, Grandma, was used to make pretty boules d’amour that I can roll out to you.

I wanted to send you this card to let you know that even though I like you better when you’re not dead, I know that you are comfortable and relaxed, like being in a spa. I’ve also started collecting shoes, and not just any old shoes: only white high-heeled shoes. Every time I put on a pair, I’m a few inches closer to you.
