  Canada’s National Arts Centre (NAC) Orchestra is praised for the passion and clarity of its performances, its visionary learning and engagement programs, and its unwavering support of Canadian creativity. The NAC Orchestra is based in Ottawa, Canada’s national capital, and has grown into one of the country’s most acclaimed and dynamic ensembles since its founding in 1969. Under the leadership of Music Director Alexander Shelley, the NAC Orchestra reflects the fabric and values of Canada, engaging communities from coast to coast to coast through inclusive programming, compelling storytelling, and innovative partnerships. 

  Since taking the helm in 2015, Shelley has shaped the Orchestra’s artistic vision, building on the legacy of his predecessor, Pinchas Zukerman, who led the ensemble for 16 seasons. Shelley’s influence extends beyond the NAC. He serves as Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the U.K. and Artistic and Music Director of Artis—Naples and the Naples Philharmonic in the U.S. Shelley’s leadership is complemented by Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds and Principal Youth Conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser. In 2024, the Orchestra marked a new chapter with the appointment of Henry Kennedy as its first-ever Resident Conductor. 

  The Orchestra has a rich history of partnerships with renowned artists such as James Ehnes, Angela Hewitt, Renée Fleming, Hilary Hahn, Jeremy Dutcher, Jan Lisiecki, Ray Chen, and Yeol Eum Son, underscoring its reputation as a destination for world-class talent. As one of the most accessible, inclusive and collaborative orchestras in the world, the NAC Orchestra uses music as a universal language to communicate the deepest of human emotions and connect people through shared experiences. 

  A hallmark of the NAC Orchestra is its national and international tours. The Orchestra has performed concerts in every Canadian province and territory and earned frequent invitations to perform abroad. These tours spotlight Canadian composers and artists, bringing their voices to stages across North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia. 

  L’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts (CNA) du Canada est reconnu pour la passion et la clarté de son jeu, ses programmes d’apprentissage et de médiation culturelle visionnaires et son soutien indéfectible à la créativité canadienne. Situé à Ottawa, la capitale nationale, il est devenu depuis sa fondation en 1969 l’un des ensembles les plus encensés et les plus dynamiques du pays. Sous la gouverne du directeur musical Alexander Shelley, l’Orchestre du CNA reflète le tissu social et les valeurs du Canada, nouant des liens avec des communautés de tout le pays grâce à sa programmation inclusive, ses récits puissants et ses partenariats innovants. 

  Alexander Shelley a façonné la vision artistique de l’Orchestre depuis qu’il en a pris les rênes en 2015, poursuivant sur la lancée de son prédécesseur, Pinchas Zukerman, qui a dirigé l’ensemble pendant 16 saisons. Le maestro Shelley jouit par ailleurs d’une belle renommée qui s’étend bien au-delà des murs du CNA, étant également premier chef d’orchestre associé de l’Orchestre philharmonique royal au Royaume-Uni ainsi que directeur artistique et musical d’Artis—Naples et de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Naples aux États-Unis. Au CNA, Alexander Shelley est épaulé dans son rôle de leader par le premier chef invité John Storgårds et par le premier chef des concerts jeunesse Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser. En 2024, l’Orchestre a ouvert un nouveau chapitre avec la nomination d’Henry Kennedy au nouveau poste de chef d’orchestre en résidence.

Il a joué dans toutes les provinces et tous les territoires du Canada et a reçu de nombreuses invitations pour se produire à l’étranger. Avec ces tournées, l’ensemble braque les projecteurs sur les artistes et les compositeurs et compositrices du Canada, faisant retentir leur musique sur les scènes de l’Amérique du Nord, du Royaume-Uni, de l’Europe et de l’Asie.

  Conductor Cosette Justo Valdés

  

  Conductor Cosette Justo Valdés

  Cosette Justo Valdés was born and raised in Cuba.  A daughter of amateur musicians, she’s loved music all her life, and she began learning piano and music theory from age 8. At 18 she saw a symphony orchestra for the first time and immediately knew she wanted to be a conductor. She took up conducting in 2003 at the National Institute of the Arts of Cuba, in Havana, and after graduating in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Orchestral Conducting with Maestro Jorge López Marín, she was appointed Music & Artistic Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente (OSO) (Santiago, Cuba), Cuba’s second-most important orchestra.  

  During her first three years at the Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente, Cosette organized and conducted numerous concerts of a broad repertoire of early music, classical, jazz, pop, and traditional Cuban music, which allowed her to start consolidating her foundation as a conductor. 

  In 2012, Cosette was admitted to study her Masters Degree with Maestro Klaus Arp in the Mannheim Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst (State University for Music & Performing Arts) in Germany. During her time in Europe she had the opportunity to conduct many orchestral, choral, and chamber ensembles while remaining Music & Artistic Director of the OSO in Cuba and returning often to conduct it. 

  Cosette held from January 2019 to March 2022 the position of Assistant Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, in Canada. During her 3 years in this position, she has been able to conduct all types of styles of music with the ESO, and her connection to the musicians of this orchestra is really special. As a result of this wonderful relationship with the ESO Cosette was appointed in March 2022 the Resident Conductor of this marvelous orchestra. 

  She has been invited in Canada as a guest conductor by the Edmonton Opera, iMusici de Montréal, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra as well as the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra in Mexico. This coming season she will be conducting the Saskatooon Symphony Orchestra, Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Island Sympony Orchestra and San Francisco Chamber Orchestra (US).

  Since 1989, almost one million young audience members have been introduced to classical music through Platypus Theatre. After more than 650 performances with more than 75 orchestras worldwide, Platypus has established itself as one of North America’s premiere music education theatre companies. Original and engaging storylines are presented in an intelligent and interactive way, with music always taking the lead role. Children laugh, sing and empathize with the characters while learning musical concepts, styles, and much more. In 2006, one of Platypus’ most beloved productions How the Gimquat Found her Song was produced for TV and went on to win several awards including Best Children’s Program at the prestigious Banff World Television Festival. In 1991, Platypus was the subject of a nationally broadcast documentary on CTV, followed by a PBS full-performance broadcast in 2000. During its 25th anniversary year, Platypus will premiere its eighth original production, Presto, Mambo!, in partnership with four orchestras across Canada. Other Platypus Productions include Emily Saves the Orchestra, Rhythm in your Rubbish, Bach to the Future, Charlotte and the Music-Maker, Flicker of Light on a Winter’s Night, and Peter and the Wolf.

  Depuis 1989, près d’un million de jeunes ont été initiés à la musique classique grâce au Théâtre Platypus. Fort de plus de 650 spectacles avec plus de 75 orchestres du monde entier, le Théâtre Platypus compte parmi les plus importantes compagnies de théâtre musical éducatif en Amérique du Nord. Ses pièces originales et captivantes, présentées de façon intelligente et interactive, mettent toujours la musique à l’avant-plan. Les enfants rient, chantent et s’identifient aux personnages, tout en apprenant une foule de notions sur la musique. L’une des productions les plus populaires de la compagnie, À la recherche du chant perdu, a été adaptée pour le petit écran en 2006 et a remporté plusieurs prix dont celui de la Meilleure émission pour enfant au prestigieux Banff World Television Festival. En 1991, le Théâtre Platypus a fait l’objet d’un documentaire télédiffusé à l’échelle nationale au réseau CTV, et en 2000, PBS diffusait intégralement l’une de ses productions. Pour son 25e anniversaire, la compagnie présente en première sa huitième production originale, Presto, Mambo!, en partenariat avec quatre orchestres de différentes régions du Canada. Parmi ses autres productions, on retrouve Émilie à la rescousse de l’orchestre, Des rebuts et des rythmes, Bach to the Future, Charlotte et le marchand de musique, Flicker of Light on a Winter’s Night et Pierre et le loup.

  Actor Peter Duschenes

  Thousands of young classical music fans have Peter to thank for introducing them to symphonic music. He co-founded the Platypus Theatre touring company in 1989 to make orchestral music accessible for youth, and more than three quarters of a million concertgoers have benefitted from his creativity. As an award-winning playwright, Peter’s writing credits include all eight Platypus productions and the television adaptation of How the Gimquat Found Her Song. In addition to his roles in Platypus shows, he has also acted and directed with companies across Canada and the United States. When Peter isn’t busy helping the Gimquat find her song, he and his wife Sarah are helping their children, Magda and Theo, find their socks.

  Des milliers de jeunes amateurs de musique classique peuvent remercier Peter de les avoir initiés à la musique symphonique. Il a cofondé la troupe itinérante Platypus Theatre en 1989 afin de rendre la musique d’orchestre plus accessible aux jeunes, et plus de 750 000 spectateurs ont bénéficié de sa créativité. En tant que dramaturge primé, Peter a signé chacune des huit productions de Platypus, ainsi que l’adaptation télévisée de À la recherche du chant perdu. En plus des rôles qu’il occupe au sein des spectacles de Platypus, il a également été comédien et metteur en scène pour plusieurs compagnies au Canada et aux États-Unis. Lorsque Peter n’est pas à la recherche du chant perdu, lui et son épouse Sarah sont à la recherche des bas perdus de leurs enfants, Magda et Theo.

  Samantha is thrilled to be part of the Platypus Theatre team! Combining her love of clown, puppetry, music, and Theatre for Young Audiences, Samantha is eager to bring to life your favourite characters from How the Gimquat Found her Song, Presto, Mambo! and Rhythm in your Rubbish. Samantha calls Montréal home, and loves to spend her days playing Shakespeare with Repercussion Theatre, and cultivating creativity for kids aged 4 to 99 as a drama teacher with Geordie Theatre School. It’s no wonder bringing something classical to the hearts and minds of young people is right up her alley! Asking questions and getting to the heart of a story is what she’s all about: believing firmly that curiosity and connection lead to joy and abundance. Samantha loves acting, singing in the car, her friends and family, her cat Tilly, and ice cream. See you at the theatre!

Combinant son amour du clown, des marionnettes, de la musique et du théâtre pour jeunes publics, Samantha est impatiente de donner vie à vos personnages préférés dans À la recherche du chant perdu, Presto, Mambo ! et Rhythm in your Rubbish. Samantha vit à Montréal et adore passer ses journées à jouer Shakespeare avec le Théâtre Répercussion et à cultiver la créativité chez les enfants de 4 à 99 ans en tant qu'enseignante d'art dramatique à la Geordie Theatre School. Il n'est donc pas surprenant qu'elle ait à cœur d'amener les jeunes à s'intéresser à la musique classique ! Poser des questions et aller au cœur d'une histoire, voilà ce qui lui tient à cœur : elle croit fermement que la curiosité et la connexion mènent à la joie et à l'abondance. Samantha aime jouer la comédie, chanter dans la voiture, ses amis et sa famille, son chat Tilly et la crème glacée. Rendez-vous au théâtre !

Orlando was born and raised in Santiago de Cuba. He turned his passion for dancing into his chosen career path when he moved to Havana after graduation. Orlando has over 20 years of experience teaching dance and organizing different events in Canada. He has organized dance trips to Cuba and many local parties, where he always brings the fun with high-energy entertainment. Orlando is a synonym of joy, energy, and good vibes, always giving his best to those around him. Fun and learning are guaranteed!

  Danseur professionnel, professeur de danse latine, animateur et DJ, Orlando est véritablement passé maître dans l’art du spectacle. Son énergie inégalable lui permet de créer des liens magiques avec le public. Né et élevé à Santiago de Cuba, Orlando a choisi de transformer sa passion pour la danse en carrière quand il s’est installé à La Havane après avoir décroché son diplôme. Cumulant plus de 20 ans d’expérience en enseignement de la danse et en organisation d’événements tous azimuts, il a toujours su en mettre plein la vue, que ce soit lors des voyages de danse à Cuba ou des nombreuses soirées au Canada. Orlando est synonyme de joie, d’énergie et de bonne ambiance; il donne toujours le meilleur de lui-même à son entourage. Plaisir et apprentissage garantis!

  Dancer Yadira Monzon Mila

  Yadira Monzon Mila is a professional dancer graduated from the famous National Art School (Escuela nacional de artes) in Havana. She is the "danseuse étoile" of diverse contemporary dance companies in Cuba, including Danza Espiral. She develops her interest in latin dance upon her arrival in Canada, first in Vancouver where she works with diverse companies and appears in numerous Hollywood productions and then in Montreal where she notably dances with the Cirque du Soleil,  the Opéra de Montréal, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and so many more, while pursuing her activities in contemporary dance.

  Danseuse professionnelle diplômée de la célèbre École nationale d'arts (Escuela nacional de artes) de La Havane, Yadira est danseuse étoile de diverses compagnies de danse contemporaine à Cuba, dont Danza Espiral. Elle développe son intérêt pour la danse latine à son arrivée au Canada, premièrement à Vancouver où elle apparaît avec diverses compagnies et dans plusieurs productions hollywoodiennes, puis à Montréal où elle danse notamment avec le Cirque du Soleil, l'Opéra de Montréal, l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal et tant d'autres, tout en poursuivant ses activités en danse contemporaine.
