  Evan Mitchell is proving to be one of the most able and imaginative conductors in Canada. Mr. Mitchell has enjoyed seven triumphant seasons as Music Director of the Kingston Symphony, garnering praise for his programming, approach, and musical results. Prior to the pandemic, the past four seasons worth of KSO Masterworks Series performances, under Mr. Mitchell’s leadership, have been completely sold-out. Mr. Mitchell is one of Canada's pre-eminent conductors of film scores live in concert, having performed nearly twenty distinct film programs live to projection. After having performed Singin' in the Rain with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, he proceeded to conduct the North American premiere of Patricia Ward Kelly's curated show "Gene Kelly: A Life in Music" with the Kingston Symphony. He has a longstanding relationship with Attila Glatz Concert Productions as well as Cineconcerts, and will have conducted all eight of the Harry Potter films by the end of the 2022/2023 season. During the 2020 pandemic, Mr. Mitchell wrote, produced, directed and edited several standout digital orchestral initiatives which exponentially increased the KSO’s online profile of viewership. The KSO's digital performances, Symphonic Education Partnership presentation, and the landmark web series for young audiences entitled Harmon in Space (www.harmoninspace.com) among others have reached over 100,000 viewers, and have been internationally acclaimed as being the benchmark for digital excellence in innovation.

  Mr. Mitchell is a champion of initiatives designed to enhance the live concert experience, such as insider videos, informational podcasts, pre-concert talks, and special concerts devoted to live, onstage insights into major orchestral works. His program SoundSync, which involves real-time guided listening updates delivered silently to mobile devices during the concert, was recently hailed as one of Canada’s best innovations to the live concert experience by the CBC. Equally comfortable in the realm of contemporary music, opera, and ballet, Mr. Mitchell has premiered over 30 new Canadian works ranging from the SOCAN award winning opera “Storybook” by Darren Russo, to Ryan Trew’s newly commissioned Symphony No. 1, as well as two digital full-orchestra world premieres during the COVID-19 lockdown (John Estacio: Domestic Divertimento, Dean Burry: Tracing Colville). He is a strong and vocal advocate for new, substantial, Canadian works. As the Vancouver Symphony's past Assistant Conductor, Mr. Mitchell is extraordinarily grateful to the VSO for his time and experience with such a world-class orchestra. He considers that experience to have been the most important element of his development as a conductor.

  Evan Mitchell s’avère l’un des chefs d’orchestre les plus doués et les plus imaginatifs au Canada. Pendant sept saisons, il a triomphé comme directeur musical dans l’Orchestre symphonique de Kingston, suscitant les éloges pour sa programmation, son approche et la magnifique musique qu’il a su mettre en valeur. Durant les quatre saisons ayant précédé la pandémie, les spectacles des séries Chefs-d’œuvre de l’orchestre ontarien sous sa direction se sont tous tenus à guichet fermé.   Evan est également l’un des maîtres canadiens de la musique de film en ciné-concert; il a en effet dirigé près de 20 programmes musicaux en direct avec projection filmique. Après Singin' in the Rain en compagnie de l’Orchestre symphonique de Kitchener-Waterloo, il a dirigé la première nord-américaine du spectacle Gene Kelly : A Life in Music, choisi par Patricia Ward Kelly, avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Kingston. Entretenant depuis longtemps une relation fructueuse avec les groupes de production Attila Glatz Concert Productions et Cineconcerts, il aura, au terme de la saison 2022-2023, dirigé chacun des huit spectacles de Harry Potter. Pendant la pandémie, Evan a écrit, produit, dirigé et monté plusieurs projets orchestraux numériques exceptionnels qui ont considérablement augmenté la visibilité numérique de l’Orchestre symphonique de Kingston. Des spectacles en ligne, un partenariat éducatif (le Symphony Education Partnership) et la série Web pour enfants unique en son genre Harmon in Space (www.harmoninspace.com), entre autres, ont touché plus de 100 000 spectatrices et spectateurs et ont été acclamés dans le monde entier pour leur excellence en matière d’innovation numérique.

  Le prolifique chef d’orchestre est aussi derrière une foule d’initiatives conçues pour rehausser l’expérience en salle, comme des vidéos dans les coulisses des concerts, des balados instructifs, des causeries d’avant-spectacle et des représentations spéciales pendant lesquelles le public a un accès privilégié aux secrets derrière certaines œuvres orchestrales majeures. Ainsi, son programme SoundSync, qui permet aux membres du public de recevoir des informations sur le concert en temps réel et en silence à partir de leur appareil mobile, a récemment été déclaré par la CBC l’une des plus grandes innovations canadiennes en ce qui a trait à l’expérience du public.   Autant à son aise avec la musique contemporaine qu’avec l’opéra et le ballet, Evan Mitchell a présenté en première plus de 30 nouvelles œuvres canadiennes allant de l’opéra primé par la SOCAN Storybook, de Darren Russo, à la nouvelle commande de la Symphonie No 1 par Ryan Trew, en passant par deux premières mondiales numériques avec orchestre complet pendant le confinement (Domestic Divertimento, dirigé par John Estacio, et Tracing Colville, dirigé par Dean Burry). Enfin, c’est un ardent défenseur des nouvelles œuvres majeures produites au Canada.   Comme ex-seconde baguette de l’Orchestre symphonique de Vancouver, il est extrêmement reconnaissant du temps qu’il y a passé en compagnie de ce groupe de musiciennes et musiciens de calibre mondial. Pour lui, c’est l’une des expériences qui l’a le plus fait évoluer en tant que chef d’orchestre.

  Since its debut in 1969, the National Arts Centre (NAC) Orchestra has been praised for the passion and clarity of its performances, its visionary educational programs, and its prominent role in nurturing Canadian creativity. Under the leadership of Music Director Alexander Shelley, the NAC Orchestra reflects the fabric and values of Canada, reaching and representing the diverse communities we live in with daring programming, powerful storytelling, inspiring artistry, and innovative partnerships.

  Alexander Shelley began his tenure as Music Director in 2015, following Pinchas Zukerman’s 16 seasons at the helm. Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and former Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra (2009–2017), he has been in demand around the world, conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic, DSO Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Stockholm Philharmonic, among others, and maintains a regular relationship with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and the German National Youth Orchestra.

  Each season, the NAC Orchestra features world-class artists such as the newly appointed Artist-in-Residence James Ehnes, Angela Hewitt, Joshua Bell, Xian Zhang, Gabriela Montero, Stewart Goodyear, Jan Lisiecki, and Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds. As one of the most accessible, inclusive, and collaborative orchestras in the world, the NAC Orchestra uses music as a universal language to communicate the deepest of human emotions and connect people through shared experiences.

  Depuis sa création en 1969, l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts (CNA) reçoit des éloges pour la passion et la clarté de ses interprétations, pour ses programmes éducatifs novateurs et pour son apport à l’expression de la créativité canadienne. Sous la direction du Directeur musical Alexander Shelley, l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts est le reflet de la diversité des paysages, des valeurs et des communautés du Canada, et est reconnu pour sa programmation audacieuse, ses contenus nrratifs marquants, son excellence artistique et ses partenariats innovants.

  Alexander Shelley a amorcé son mandat à la direction musicale de l’Orchestre du CNA en 2015, succédant à Pinchas Zukerman, qui a été aux commandes de l’ensemble pendant 16 saisons. Premier chef associé du Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Shelley a été le premier chef de l’Orchestre symphonique de Nuremberg de 2009 à 2017.
