  Santee Smith / Tekaronhiáhkhwa is a multidisciplinary artist from the Kahnyen’kehàka Nation, Turtle Clan, Ohswé:ken/Six Nations of the Grand River. Transformation, energetic exchange and fostering mind-heart connections through performance and design is her lifelong work. Santee trained at Canada’s National Ballet School; holds Physical Education and Psychology degrees from McMaster University and a M.A. in Dance from York University.

  Premiering her first production Kaha:wi – a family creation story in 2004, one year later she founded Kaha:wi Dance Theatre which has grown into an internationally renowned company. Santee’s work speaks about identity, teachings and way of life within Onkwehonwe:neha, creativity and Indigenous artistic process. She is a sought-after teacher and speaker on the performing arts, Indigenous performance, and culture.

  Smith is faculty at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity’s World Indigenous Dance Residency 2024 and curator and visionary of Inviting the Land to Shape Us series of land-based workshops and creation labs focused on Indigenous performance research.

  Recently, she premiered Dora Award nominated multimedia production SKéN:NEN at TOLive 2024 and toured award-winning The Mush Hole embodying the truths of Canada’s oldest and standing Indian Residential School, The Mohawk Institute.

  Santee Smith / Tekaronhiáhkhwa est une artiste multidisciplinaire kahnyen’kehàka du clan de la Tortue des Six Nations de la rivière Grand (Ohswé:ken, Ontario). Depuis le début de sa carrière, elle s’intéresse à la transformation, à l’échange d’énergie et aux liens entre le cœur et l’esprit. Formée à l’École nationale de ballet du Canada, elle est titulaire de diplômes en éducation physique et en psychologie de l’Université McMaster ainsi que d’une maîtrise en danse de l’Université York.

  Elle présente sa première œuvre, Kaha:wi, un récit de création familial, en 2004. Un an plus tard, elle fonde la troupe Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, dont la renommée est devenue internationale. Son travail porte sur l’identité, les enseignements et le mode de vie de l’Onkwehonwe’néha, la créativité et les pratiques artistiques autochtones. Elle est en outre une enseignante et une conférencière recherchée dans le domaine des arts du spectacle, de la culture et des arts de la scène autochtones.

  Elle fait partie de l’équipe d’encadrement du programme d’artiste en résidence (danse autochtone) du Centre des arts de Banff. Elle est également la programmatrice et la visionnaire de la série d’ateliers « Inviter la terre à nous façonner » et des laboratoires de création sur la recherche dans le domaine des arts du spectacle autochtones.

  Récemment, elle a présenté pour la première fois à TO Live SKéN:NEN, une production multimédia finaliste aux prix Dora, et accompagné en tournée l’équipe de la pièce primée The Mush Hole relatant les expériences des pensionnaires de l’Institut Mohawk – le plus ancien pensionnat autochtone au Canada.

  Performer Katie Couchie

  Katie Couchie is an Anishinaabekwe Oji-Cree dance artist from Nbisiing (Nipissing First Nation), now based in Tkaronto. Katie has worked with companies and choreographers including Kaha:wi Dance Theatre (Santee Smith), A’nó:wara Dance Theatre (Barbara Diabo), Human Body Expressions (Hanna Kiel), Alejandro Ronceria, Christine Friday, Peggy Baker, and Cameron Fraser-Monroe.

  Katie is a Dora nominated artist for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble for the productions of Homelands and SKéN:NEN created by Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and has performed at events including APTN’s Indigenous Day Live (2022), the FODAR Dance Festival (2023), Governor General’s Performance Awards (2023), and MOCA Live: Contemporary x Dance (2024).

  Currently, Katie is working on her first solo piece where she spent the summer as the Artist in Residence at the University of Toronto and is grateful to be back working on Homelands again with the Kaha:wi Dance Theatre team.

  Katie Couchie est une danseuse anishinaabekwe oji-crie de la Première Nation Nipissing qui vit à Tkaronto. Elle a travaillé avec de multiples compagnies et chorégraphes, notamment Kaha:wi Dance Theatre (Santee Smith), A’nó:wara Dance Theatre (Barbara Diabo), Human Body Expressions (Hanna Kiel), Alejandro Ronceria, Christine Friday, Peggy Baker et Cameron Fraser-Monroe.

  Finaliste aux prix Dora dans la catégorie « meilleure troupe de danse » pour les productions Homelands et SKéN:NEN du Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, elle s’est produite lors de divers événements, notamment l’édition 2022 de la Journée des Autochtones diffusée sur la chaîne APTN, le festival de danse d’Annapolis Royal (2023), les Prix du Gouverneur général pour les arts du spectacle (2023) et MOCA Live: Contemporary x Dance (2024).

  Actuellement en pleine création de son premier solo, elle a participé à une résidence artistique d’été à l’Université de Toronto. Elle se réjouit de retrouver l’équipe de Homelands du Kaha:wi Dance Theatre.

  Sarah Prosper (she/they/nekm) is from Eskasoni Mi’kmaq First Nations. Prosper's practice encompasses a lens that deepens the threads of respect and reciprocity to dance, movement, social sciences, social justice, mental health & the land. Sarah began dancing at age 2 at Cape Breton School of the Arts (Gallop’s) and NADACA dance programs. Her first works created as an artistic director and choreographer is the Merritt Award winning show SAMQWAN 2021-2023 at the Highland Arts, Neptune Theatre, Stratford Festival Film and 2023 Canada Games.

  Prosper’s collaborations and creations have taken her on an international tour and her passions remain in creating community work and extending the opportunities of wellness. An award winner of the 2022 Nova Scotia Indigenous Artist Recognition Award and Recognized by the Province House in 2023. Performing and creating on national stages in collaboration with world artists such as: Alan Syliboy & the Thunder Makers, Mocean Dance (Where Dance & Music Meet, Touring Utawtiwow Kijinaq), Nestuita’si Storytelling (Koqm & Winter Moons), Biennale, Spirit Song Festival, Prismatic Arts Festival, IOTA Bodies in Movement, JUNOS, performed with Yo-Yo Ma/Jeremy Dutcher & Toronto Symphony, Symphony Nova Scotia, and more.

  Sarah Prosper (elle/iel/nekm) est originaire de la Première Nation d’Eskasoni (Mi’kmaq). Dans sa pratique, elle s’intéresse aux fils du respect et de la réciprocité dans la danse, le mouvement, les sciences sociales, la justice sociale, la santé mentale et la terre. Elle commence la danse à l’âge de deux ans à l’École des arts du Cap-Breton (Gallop’s), puis suit les programmes de danse parascolaires NADACA. Sa première chorégraphie, SAMQWAN, primée aux prix Merritt a été présentée entre 2021 et 2023 au Highland Arts Theatre, au Neptune Theatre, au Festival de Stratford et aux Jeux du Canada.

  Son travail l’a menée à tourner à l’international et a créé des œuvres communautaires favorisant le mieux-être. Elle a obtenu en 2022 le Prix du mérite pour un artiste autochtone de la Nouvelle-Écosse et a été récompensée par la Province House en 2023. On a pu la voir sur les scènes nationales aux côtés de grands noms comme Alan Syliboy & The Thunder Makers, Mocean Dance (Where Dance and Music Meet, tournée de la pièce Utawtiwow Kijinaq), Yo-Yo Ma, Jeremy Dutcher et l’Orchestre symphonique de Toronto, l’Orchestre symphonique de la Nouvelle-Écosse, et Koqm (Winter Moons, production de Nestuita'si Storytelling). Elle s’est également produite à la Bonavista Biennale, au Festival Spirit Song, au Festival Prismatic Arts, à l’IOTA Institute (résidence Bodies in Movement) et aux prix JUNO.
