“Preljocaj's choreographic imagination steals over you. His movements give a freshly vivid inflection to his characters” UDITH MACKRELL, THE GUARDIAN, 2014 (REVIEWING PERFORMANCE BY BALLET PRELJOCAJ)
- In-person event
Featuring the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
A modern take on the story of Snow White, replete with all well-known characters — the miners, the wicked stepmother, the witch, and of course the prince — with a decidedly more gripping, psychological, creative approach.
From this classic fairy tale inspired by the Brothers’ Grimm, French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj has crafted a visually stunning contemporary ballet. With its aerial scenes, mature narrative and edgy costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier, this show is far from a children's story.
Emphasizing the story’s dark side and the wicked stepmother’s cruelty, Preljocaj chose to pair Gustav Mahler's compositions with electroacoustic sounds. Gorgeously performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet –an Ottawa debut–, Snow White will amaze you, and prompt reflection on the parallels between the conflicts in modern society and those so frequently found in fairy tales.
Please note that this performance is recommended for an audience of ages 13 +. This Ballet contains a scene with mature themes and sexual references and may not be suitable for a younger audience.
