Turkwaz is a unique combination of four musician/singers immersed in diverse musical traditions – from mysterious Sufi devotional love songs to rousing Thracian dance music. Each performer brings a distinct voice to the group. Maryem Hassan Tollar draws on her Arabic language heritage, Jayne Brown and Sophia Grigoriadis bring their experience with Greek music to the mix, and Brenna MacCrimmon adds her fascination with Turkish culture.

The respect Turkwaz has for the traditions they draw from is clear, but they don’t shy away from creating new and surprising arrangements to give each song a fresh spin. Together they share and explore the music, creating their own adaptations and cultivating a sonic union that is mesmerizing and sweet.

This concert is presented in collaboration with Ottawa Chamberfest as part of Canada Scene’s free music series, running every day from July 2 to 23. The series showcases this country’s top folk, roots, world, and jazz artists in the NAC’s new Atrium.

*This performance starts at 3:00 pm.
