Jill Barber: Music and motherhood

Singer-songwriter Jill Barber is a repeat performer at NAC Presents, a concert series showcasing Canada’s best singer-songwriters. Inspired by many musical styles, she deftly combines a Motown groove with sophisticated retro pop on her sixth album Fool’s Gold.

Music and motherhood, however, are very different genres, so it’s not surprising she was hesitant about how to blend them.

“I’ve spent the last 10 or 12 years trying to build momentum in my career, so the idea of taking a break was really a frightening prospect for me,” she said.

And so she did some research.

Barber sought advice from other performing moms in the Canadian music scene and received lots of encouragement from fellow performing moms like Emm Gryner, Amy Millan, Caroline Brooks and Measha Brueggergosman.

She has no doubt she made the right decision.

In partnership with with NAC Presents, Barber will perform in the NAC Theatre in March 2015, and hopes to one day sing on the Southam Hall stage.
