A story of identity: Going Home Star - Truth and Reconcilation

The Truth and Reconciliation's outcome report summary states that "These residential schools were created for the purpose of separating Aboriginal children from their families, in order to minimize and weaken family ties and cultural linkages, and to indoctrinate children into a new culture—the culture of the legally dominant Euro-Christian Canadian society."
The survivors of the residential school system often returned to their communities without an identify and the trauma of their experience continues to be felt today.

Yet there are still many Canadians who do not know this story. It was for this reason André Lewis the Artistic Director of Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet commissioned Going Home Star - Truth and Reconciliation.

"What Marc Godin the choreographer has done is metaphorical to a large degree but you get what they're trying to say." explains Lewis.   "You speak about difficult subjects. And I think art and dance in itself can do that very powerfully."
