Le Patin Libre, whose members are all highly trained skaters, caused a sensation with Vertical Influences, a revolutionary revision of what an ice show can be, performed on our NAC Dance season in 2015. The same artistic team – Pascale Jodoin, Jasmin Boivin, Taylor Dilley, Samory Ba and Alexandre Hamel, joined by dramaturg Ruth Little – now bring us another gravity-defying show, Threshold. The troupe has created a new kind of ice dancing far beyond the confines of traditional figure...

Le Patin Libre continues to expand the development of their distinctive art form of dance on ice. Accomplished skaters individually, together they have created an impressive new canvas within the arena platform, integrating inventive ideas, patterns, and production elements. Through their expressive techniques, they create a stimulating world through the glide, sounds, and sights of their skating finesse, pushing us to dive into a new realm of choreographic expression.

NAC Dance is honoured to bring you these performances on the traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Nation, and we gratefully acknowledge them as past, present, and future stewards of this land.

Enjoy!

Word from Alexandre Hamel

Carved by the five founding artists and the dramaturg Ruth Little, Threshold occupies the liminal space between contrasting states of being.

What’s happening on the line between before and after?

Responding to the extreme environment of the ice rink, Threshold takes its audience from the everyday into an otherworldly place in which bodies and emotions are transformed. As glide allows infinite options between fast-forward, slow-motion and rewind, Le Patin Libre explores an impossible but significant no-man’s land where life and death dance together on the edge of a blade.

Word from Ruth Little

A gathering, a journey, a game.
An accident.
A transformation of bodies, lives, desires.

Threshold, a new work by acclaimed contemporary skaters Le Patin Libre, takes us over the edge of the world we know and into the wilderness between dog and wolf.

Threshold is a poem-in-motion about displace-ment, change, loss, and memory. Performed to Jasmin Boivin’s beautiful and unearthly music, Threshold is in every way a transformative experience of contemporary dance.
