Chloé Sainte-Marie celebrates the diversity of languages in the NAC’s Azrieli Studio!
Accompanied by Catherine Le Saunier (cello, percussion and backup vocals) and Yves Desrosiers (guitar), Chloé Sainte-Marie continues to tour the province with a new version of her show Maudit Silence.
Maudit silence is the product of Chloé Sainte-Marie’s travels through South America in search of her own identity. Completed in collaboration with writer and geographer Jean Morisset and titled by the Innu poet Joséphine Bacon, it explores the cultures and languages of the Americas from Montréal to Patagonia.
And the title is far from trivial, as Chloé Sainte-Marie explains, quoting Joséphine Bacon:
“When silence becomes a curse, you have to speak out … and fight it with all the voices you can muster! Voices that are free, that don’t beat around the bush. I work only with people who can speak freely.” (Transl.)
Singer, performer and lecturer Chloé Sainte-Marie is well known as the muse, caregiver and wife of filmmaker Gilles Carle, who died of Parkinson’s disease. Through the Fondation des maisons Gilles-Carle, which she established, she has become the voice of caregivers. She has released seven albums and two book-discs, including the recent Maudit Silence, which features the languages and cultures of the Americas.
