  For over 60 years, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens has been a creation, production and international performance company devoted to the development of dance in all its forms, while always staying faithful to the spirit of classical ballet. The dancers of Les Grands Ballets, under the artistic direction of Ivan Cavallari, perform choreographies by both long-established and trendsetting creators. Situated at the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, Les Grands Ballets offers leisure services in its STUDIOS and supports its National Centre for Dance Therapy, which promotes all the benefits that dance can bring. The company’s mission is also to ensure accessibility to art for everyone; in that spirit its achievements include the founding of The Nutcracker Fund, which every year enables thousands of children to enjoy a first ballet experience. Les Grands Ballets, recognized for its excellence, creativity and daring, is fully committed to the local community, and is acclaimed on stages around the world.

  Depuis plus de 60 ans, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens sont une compagnie de création et de production internationale qui se consacre au développement de la danse sous toutes ses formes, en s’appuyant sur la discipline du ballet classique. Les danseuses et danseurs des Grands Ballets, sous la direction artistique d’Ivan Cavallari, interprètent des chorégraphies de créateurs de référence et d’avant-garde. Établis au coeur du Quartier des spectacles à Montréal, Les Grands Ballets proposent des activités de loisirs avec ses STUDIOS et soutiennent le Centre national de danse-thérapie qui fait la promotion de tous les bienfaits que procure la danse. La vocation de la compagnie est également d’assurer un accès à l’art pour tous et c’est en ce sens qu’elle dote, entre autres, le Fonds Casse-Noisette qui permet à des milliers d'enfants d'être initiés au ballet chaque année.   Since its debut in 1969, the National Arts Centre (NAC) Orchestra has been praised for the passion and clarity of its performances, its visionary educational programs, and its prominent role in nurturing Canadian creativity. Under the leadership of Music Director Alexander Shelley, the NAC Orchestra reflects the fabric and values of Canada, reaching and representing the diverse communities we live in with daring programming, powerful storytelling, inspiring artistry, and innovative partnerships.

  Alexander Shelley began his tenure as Music Director in 2015, following Pinchas Zukerman’s 16 seasons at the helm. Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and former Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra (2009–2017), he has been in demand around the world, conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic, DSO Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Stockholm Philharmonic, among others, and maintains a regular relationship with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and the German National Youth Orchestra.

  Each season, the NAC Orchestra features world-class artists such as the newly appointed Artist-in-Residence James Ehnes, Angela Hewitt, Joshua Bell, Xian Zhang, Gabriela Montero, Stewart Goodyear, Jan Lisiecki, and Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds. As one of the most accessible, inclusive, and collaborative orchestras in the world, the NAC Orchestra uses music as a universal language to communicate the deepest of human emotions and connect people through shared experiences.

  Depuis sa création en 1969, l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts (CNA) reçoit des éloges pour la passion et la clarté de ses interprétations, pour ses programmes éducatifs novateurs et pour son apport à l’expression de la créativité canadienne. Sous la direction du Directeur musical Alexander Shelley, l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts est le reflet de la diversité des paysages, des valeurs et des communautés du Canada, et est reconnu pour sa programmation audacieuse, ses contenus nrratifs marquants, son excellence artistique et ses partenariats innovants.

  Alexander Shelley a amorcé son mandat à la direction musicale de l’Orchestre du CNA en 2015, succédant à Pinchas Zukerman, qui a été aux commandes de l’ensemble pendant 16 saisons. Premier chef associé du Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Shelley a été le premier chef de l’Orchestre symphonique de Nuremberg de 2009 à 2017. Demandé partout dans le monde, il a dirigé entre autres la Philharmonie de Rotterdam, DSO Berlin, le Leipzig Gewandhaus et la Philharmonie de Stockholm, et il maintient des liens avec la Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie et l’Orchestre national des jeunes d’Allemagne.

  Chaque saison, l’Orchestre du met en vedette des artistes de réputation internationale, tels que notre artiste en résidence James Ehnes, Angela Hewitt, Joshua Bell, Xian Zhang, Gabriela Montero, Stewart Goodyear, Jan Lisiecki et le premier chef invité John Storgårds.   Artistic director Ivan Cavallari

  Born in Bolzano, Italy, in 1964, Ivan Cavallari received his initial training at the Teatro alla Scala Ballet School in Milan. His teachers recognized his talent by awarding him a scholarship to the Bolchoi Ballet School in Moscow in 1981, where he continued his training until 1983. From 1984 to 1985, he danced with the Scala Ballet School before joining the Stuttgart Ballet in 1986, where he became a soloist and then principal dancer under the successive directorships of Marcia Haydée and Reid Anderson. He danced all the leading roles of John Cranko’s ballets and regularly staged the latter’s works with the Royal Ballet Covent Garden in London, La Scala in Milan, the Czech National Ballet, among many other companies. He also staged numerous works by Uwe Scholz, and choreographed ballets for the Stuttgart Ballet, the State Opera Ballet in Hanover, the Lodz State Opera Ballet in Poland, the Mannheim Ballet, the Vienna State Opera Ballet, the Staatsgallerie Stuttgart and the Liaoning Ballet of China.

  From 2007 to 2012, he was the Artistic Director of the West Australian Ballet, the oldest dance company in Australia. In 2013, he was named the Artistic Director of the Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin, where he staged such works as Dolly in April 2013, and his own choreographies of Pinocchio in 2014 and The Nutcracker in 2016.

  He took over the helm of Les Grands Ballets as Artistic Director as of the 2017-2018 season. As choreographer, he created new works such as Presto-Detto and Giselle, taking the company's repertoire in a resolutely classical direction while remaining rooted in modernity. His version of Romeo & Juliet premiered in March 2022 at Place des Arts in Montreal.

  Né à Bolzano, en Italie, en 1964, Ivan Cavallari intègre l'école du Ballet de La Scala à Milan, avant d'être boursier à l'école du Bolchoï Ballet de Moscou, en 1981, où il poursuit sa formation jusqu'en 1983. De 1984 à 1985, il est danseur au sein du Ballet de La Scala, et en 1986, il entre au Ballet de Stuttgart, où il devient danseur étoile en 1991, sous la direction artistique de Marcia Haydée, puis de Reid Anderson. Il danse tous les premiers rôles des ballets de John Cranko et remonte régulièrement ses œuvres pour des compagnies telles que le Royal Ballet du Covent Garden de Londres, La Scala de Milan et le Ballet national tchèque à Prague, entre autres. Il remonte aussi de nombreuses œuvres d'Uwe Scholz. Il crée également des chorégraphies pour le Ballet de Stuttgart, le Ballet der Staatsoper à Hanovre, le Ballet de Lodz State Opera en Pologne, le Ballet de Mannheim, le Ballet du Staatsoper de Vienne, la Staatsgallerie Stuttgart et et les Liaoning Ballet en Chine.

  De 2007 à 2012, il assume la direction artistique du West Australian Ballet, la plus ancienne compagnie de danse d'Australie. En 2013, il devient directeur artistique du Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin. Il y crée entre autres Dolly, en avril 2013, remonte son Pinocchio, en janvier 2014, et présente son Casse-Noisette, en avril 2016.

  Il prend la tête des Grands Ballets en tant que directeur artistique à partir de la saison 2017-2018. En tant que chorégraphe, il y crée de nouvelles œuvres telles que Presto-Detto et Giselle, ramenant le répertoire de la compagnie dans une direction résolument classique tout en restant ancré dans la modernité. Sa version de Roméo & Juliette fut présentée en grande première en mars 2022, à la Place des Arts de Montréal.

  Choreographer Fernand Nault

  Born in Montreal, Fernand Nault first studied dance with Maurice Morenoff and then in New York, London and Paris with renowned masters. From 1944 to 1965, he was a dancer, then ballet master at The American Ballet Theatre. From 1960 to 1964, he was also director of the company’s school in New York.

  In 1965, he joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens as co‑artistic director and resident choreographer. He helped the company take flight by creating astonishingly diverse works, ranging from classical to neo‑classical, by way of contemporary and theatrical dance. Thus he added to the repertoire works such as La Fille mal gardée, Danses concertantes, Symphony of Psalms, Liberté tempérée, La Scouine and The Seven Deadly Sins not to mention his famous The Nutcracker presented each year since 1964 and two works of resounding success and international renown: Carmina Burana and Tommy.

  Fernand Nault remained resident choreographer of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens while serving as choreographer and ballet master at l’École supérieure de danse du Québec. Between 1985 and 1988, at the request of Ludmilla Chiriaeff, he organized several series of performances intended to foster a taste for dance among elementary, secondary schools and cegeps students in the Montreal region.

  Fernand Nault has conceived choreographies for The American Ballet Theatre, The Joffrey Ballet, The Atlanta Ballet, The Ballet Federation of the Philippines, The Delta Festival Ballet and The Washington Ballet. From 1978 to 1981 he was guest choreographer and, from 1981 to 1982, artistic director of The Colorado Ballet. Among other collaborations, Fernand Nault choreographed the dance sequences of Aïda and La Veuve joyeuse presented by L’Opéra de Montréal in 1986 and 1991.

  Fernand Nault has received three awards from the Canadian government, the Centennial Medal, in 1967, the Order of Canada, in 1977 and the Governor General’s awards for the performing arts, in 2000. He has been awarded the prize for choreography, in 1976, for his ballet Incohérence at the 7^th International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. In 1984, he was honoured by the Government of Quebec with the prix Denise‑Pelletier, a lifetime achievement award. In 1990, he was accepted as a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec and was named Choreographer Emeritus of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.

  In 2003, Fernand Nault founded the Fonds chorégraphique Ferrnand Nault, a trust with mission to insure the continuity of his choreographic heritage and to make accessible is repertoire to professional dance companies and schools.

  Fernand Nault passed away on December 26^th 2006 at the dawn of his 86^th anniversary.

  En 1965, il se joint aux Grands Ballets à titre de codirecteur artistique et de chorégraphe attitré. Il permet à la jeune compagnie de prendre son envol en réalisant des pièces d’une diversité étonnante; classiques, néoclassiques ou modernes. Il ajoute à son répertoire des oeuvres telles que La Fille mal gardée, Danses concertantes, Symphonie de psaumes, Liberté tempérée, La Scouine et Les Sept Péchés capitaux, sans oublier Casse-Noisette, et deux oeuvres au succès retentissant, reconnues mondialement, Carmina Burana et Tommy.

  Tout en demeurant chorégraphe attitré des Grands Ballets, Fernand Nault cumule les fonctions de chorégraphe et de maître de ballet à l’École supérieure de danse du Québec. De 1985 à 1988, il monte, à l’instigation de madame Chiriaeff, plusieurs séries de spectacles destinées à éveiller le goût de la danse chez les élèves des écoles primaires et secondaires ainsi que chez les étudiants des cégeps de la région de Montréal.

  Fernand Nault a signé de nombreuses chorégraphies pour l’Alberta Ballet, l’American Ballet Theatre, le Ballet national de Corée, le Joffrey Ballet, l’Atlanta Ballet, le Ballet Federation of the Philippines, le Delta Festival Ballet et le Washington Ballet. Il est également, de 1978 à 1981, chorégraphe invité du Colorado Ballet, dont il assumera la direction artistique de 1981 à 1982. Parmi ses autres collaborations, on compte les chorégraphies des opéras Aïda et La Veuve joyeuse, présentées par l’Opéra de Montréal en 1986 et en 1991.

  Le gouvernement du Canada a honoré Fernand Nault à trois reprises, en lui accordant la Médaille du centenaire en 1967, l’Ordre du Canada en 1977, et le Prix du gouverneur général pour les arts de la scène en 2000. En 1976, on lui décernait le Prix de la chorégraphie du VIIe Concours international de ballet de Varna, en Bulgarie, pour son ballet Incohérence. En 1984, il recevait le prix Denise-Pelletier pour les arts d’interprétation du gouvernement du Québec. En 1990, il était reçu chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec et, la même année, Les Grands Ballets lui décernaient le titre de chorégraphe émérite.

  En 2003, il créait le Fonds chorégraphique Fernand Nault, une fiducie dont la mission est d’assurer la continuité de son patrimoine chorégraphique et la diffusion de ses oeuvres auprès des compagnies et des écoles de danse professionnelles.

  Fernand Nault est décédé le 26 décembre 2006 à l’aube de son 86^e anniversaire.
