  Artistic Leader / Choreographer  Elle Sofe Sara

  Elle Sofe Sara is described as one of the most interesting and important choreographers in her generation in Norway. She grew up in and lives in Guovdageaidnu Finnmark. In addition to working as a choreographer, she has also made several award-winning short films and documentaries. She is currently working on a feature film, which will be the first feature film musical in Sámi language.

  Sara’s work expands upon seemingly mundane, often overlooked areas of Sámi physicality—unspoken rituals that have escaped the vice grip of colonialism. Sara uncovers a space in which the past and the present coincide.

  While her choreography is known for its playful approach, she also delves into taboo subjects such as trauma, abuse, and suicide. As an Indigenous artist, Sara seeks to create work that resonates as strongly for her community as it does for the art world.

  Internationally, Sara has created work with Liu Chi (China), Wimme (Finland), and Lana Hansen (Greenland) among others. She is also the co-founder of DÁIDDADÁLLU, a Sámi indiginous contemporary art collective.

  Often people ask me how they should define or look at my work: is it dance, is it a performance concert, theatre or what? In my opinion there is no need to define. Vástadus eana / The answer is land is its own.

  Ce peuple autochtone dont elle fait partie vit dans une région transnationale appelée Sápmi, qui s’étend à travers le centre de la Norvège et de la Suède, le nord de la Finlande et la péninsule de Kola en Russie. La chorégraphe vit sur ce territoire, à Guovdageaidnu en Norvège, dans la localité où elle a grandi dans une famille qui élevait des rennes. Elle y a d’ailleurs cofondé le collectif artistique sámi Dáiddadállu. Chaque année, Elle Sofe Sara participe à la migration saisonnière des rennes et, à l’automne avec ses enfants, au marquage des nouveau-nés.

  Titulaire d’une maîtrise en chorégraphie de l’École nationale des arts d’Oslo (KHIO), Elle Sofe Sara a également étudié la danse au conservatoire Laban Trinity à Londres. Ses œuvres ont été maintes fois primées, notamment le court métrage Ribadit (2019), qui a remporté le prix Moon Jury au festival imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts à Toronto.

  Les projets actuels et futurs de Sara comprennent la création d’une pièce pour la compagnie de danse norvégienne Carte Blanche (en 2023) et la réalisation du premier long métrage musical dans l’une des langues sames (en 2025). Intitulé Árru, ce film ancré dans la tradition vocale du joik, porte sur l’impact socioécologique d’une mine de cuivre à proximité de Guovdageaidnu.

  Performer Sara Marielle Gaup Beaska

  Sara Marielle Gaup is a traditional and modern north-Sámi juoigi (yoiker) who also works with duodji (Sámi crafts). She is a mother and an activist and has a decolonizing agenda with everything she does. She wears gákti (traditional clothes) every day, and she yoiks/sings daily.

  Sara Marielle has been a full-time musician the last 20 years and is one of the most known sámi yoik-artists. She is most known for being the vocalist and composer in the music groups Adjágas and Arvvas. Because of the colonization and christening of Sápmi that led to a severe decrease and almost disappearance of the sámi culture, Sara Marielle`s longstanding project has always been to learn and teach traditional sámi luohti (yoik) in order to keep this endangered tradition alive.

  Sara Marielle Gaup est une juoigi (joikeuse) nord-samie à la fois traditionnelle et moderne qui travaille également le duodji (art décoratif sami). Mère et militante, elle aborde toute chose dans un esprit de décolonisation. Elle porte chaque jour le gákti (vêtement traditionnel) et pratique le joik au quotidien.

  Musicienne à temps plein depuis 20 ans, elle est l’une des plus célèbres artistes de joik sami. On la connaît surtout en tant que chanteuse et compositrice des groupes musicaux Adjágas et Arvvas. Puisque la colonisation et la christianisation du territoire sami a presque anéanti cette culture, Sara Marielle Gaup travaille à un projet de longue haleine, soit apprendre et enseigner le luohti (style de chant joik) traditionnel sami pour préserver cette pratique menacée.

  Performer Emma Elliane Oskal Valkeapää

  Emma Elliane Oskal Valkeapää is a Sàmi artist and actress from Guovdageaidnu. Growing up with traditional Sámi music and yoik, Oskal Valkeapää creates contemporary music where she combines her own yoiks and songs with modern elements. 

  Oskal Valkeapää collaborates with Sara as a yoiker. Their collaboration started in 2023 when she became a yoiker in Vástádu eana – The answer is land. 

  Emma Elliane Oskal Valkeapää est une artiste et actrice sami originaire de Guovdageaidnu. Ayant grandi avec la musique traditionnelle samie et le jyoik, Oskal Valkeapää crée de la musique contemporaine en combinant ses propres joiks et chansons qui comportent des éléments modernes.

  Oskal Valkeapää collabore avec Sara en tant qu’interprète de joik. Leur collaboration a débuté en 2023 lorsqu'elle est devenue interprète de joik dans Vástádu eana – La réponse est la terre.

  Performer Grete Daling

  

  Performer Grete Daling

  Grete Daling works as a senior lecturer at Nord University and is a freelance singer, singing coach, teacher and conductor. She has extensive experience in classical singing, Cuban music and joik, and works mostly on the use of voice, especially in relation to ensembles such as vocal groups and choirs. 

  Darling collaborates with Sara as a singer and vocally as a co-creator. Their collaboration started in 2021 during the production of Vástádus eana / The answer is land. 

  Grete Daling est conférencière à l'université de Nord et chanteuse indépendante, coach de chant, professeure et cheffe d'orchestre. Elle possède une expertise dans les domaines du chant classique, de la musique cubaine et du joik. Elle travaille principalement sur l'utilisation de la voix, notamment dans le cadre d'ensembles tels que des groupes vocaux et des chœurs.

  Darling collabore avec Sara en tant que chanteuse et co-créatrice vocale. Leur collaboration a débuté en 2021 lors de la production de Vástádus eana / La réponse est la terre.

  Performer Olga-Lise Holmen

  Olga-Lise Holmen is a freelance musician/artist. She is a sea-sámi and has taken back her indigenous roots during the last years. 

  Holmen collaborates with Sara as a singer, yoiker and as a co-creator vocally. Their collaboration started in 2021 during the production of Vástádus eana / The answer is land. 

  Olga-Lise Holmen est une musicienne/artiste indépendante. Elle est une sami des côtes et s’est réapproprié ses racines autochtones au cours des dernières années.

  Holmen collabore avec Sara en tant que chanteuse, interprète de joik et co-créatrice vocale. Leur collaboration a débuté en 2021 lors de la production de Vástádus eana / La réponse est la terre.

  Performer Nora Svenning

  Nora Sveninng is a contemporary dancer with a background in classical ballet. She has worked with choreographers/companies such as Panta Rei Dance Theater, Sølvi Edvardsen, Astrid Serine Hoel, Frikar, and has toured nationally and internationally.

  Svenning works with Sara as a dancer and with generating movement material. Their collaboration started in 2017 during the production of Jielemen Aavoe. 

  Nora Sveninng est une danseuse contemporaine avec une formation en ballet classique. Elle a travaillé avec des chorégraphes et compagnies tels que Panta Rei Dance Theater, Sølvi Edvardsen, Astrid Serine Hoel, Frikar, et a effectué des tournées nationales et internationales.

  Svenning travaille avec Sara en tant que danseuse et au  niveau de la création du mouvement. Leur collaboration a débuté en 2017 lors de la production de Jielemen Aavoe.

  Performer Vilja Kwasny

  Vilja Tjemsland Kwaśny is a Norwegian/Polish dancer.  She has worked as a freelance dancer with choreographers such as Roza Moshtaghi, Simone Grøtte, Karen Eide Bøen, Tormod Midtbø, Hege Haagenrud and Shi Pratt. Vilja has worked with the dance company Nagelhus Schia Productions since 2019 and was employed as a dancer in Carte Blanche – The Norwegian National Company for Contemporary Dance in 2021.

  Tjemsland Kwaśny collaborates with Sara as a dancer and with generating movement material. She also serves as a project manager for Birra. Their collaboration started in 2022 when she became a dancer in Vástádus eana / The answer is land. 

  Vilja Tjemsland Kwaśny est une danseuse norvégienne et polonaise.  Elle a travaillé en tant que danseuse indépendante avec des chorégraphes tels que Roza Moshtaghi, Simone Grøtte, Karen Eide Bøen, Tormod Midtbø, Hege Haagenrud et Shi Pratt. Vilja travaille avec la compagnie de danse Nagelhus Schia Productions depuis 2019 et a été employée comme danseuse pour la compagnie Carte Blanche - The Norwegian National Company for Contemporary Dance en 2021.

  Julie Moviken is a performer and creator. She has worked with choreographers such as Kristin Helgebostad, Ingri Fiksdal and Janne-Camilla Lyster.

  Moviken collaborates with Sara as a dancer and with generating movement material. Their collaboration started in 2021 during the production of Vástádu eanas / The answer is land.
