Our return to the shared concert experience, and the opening of our season, begins with a program moving from darkness to light.

Throughout the centuries, the trumpet has provided a clarion call to humanity—to fight, to worship, to acclaim, or to celebrate. Principal Trumpet Karen Donnelly has composed a moving hymn for solo trumpet which leads us into the beauty and sorrow of Trevor Weston’s “Ashes” for unaccompanied voices. Commissioned in 2002 for the choir of New York’s Trinity Wall Street, “Ashes” evokes the sound and colour of the world in ashes after the fall of the World Trade Center, and is a touchstone for remembrance as the world marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Of her new work Prayer, composer Vivian Fung says, “[never] have I worn my heart on my sleeve as transparently as with this piece.” A co-commission of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and CBC in the early weeks of Covid-19, Prayer premiered online in June 2020, with at least one musician from each of Canada’s 28 professional orchestras performing.

“Ninaivanjali” is a Tamil expression that means “in memory of,” and Gabriel Dharmoo’s enigmatic creation of the same name pays tribute to Dharmoo’s Indian rhythm teacher.

Our concert closes with Tchaikovsky’s exhilarating Symphony No. 4, dedicated to his patron and “best friend” Nadezhda von Meck. From beginning to end, this beautiful work grows persuasively from melancholy to triumph—urgent, supercharged, and jubilant.

Since its debut in 1969, the National Arts Centre (NAC) Orchestra has been praised for the passion and clarity of its performances, its visionary educational programs, and its prominent role in nurturing Canadian creativity. Under the leadership of Music Director Alexander Shelley, the NAC Orchestra reflects the fabric and values of Canada, reaching and representing the diverse communities we live in with daring programming, powerful storytelling, inspiring artistry, and innovative partnerships.

Alexander Shelley began his tenure as Music Director in 2015, following Pinchas Zukerman’s 16 seasons at the helm. Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and former Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra (2009–2017), he has been in demand around the world, conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic, DSO Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Stockholm Philharmonic, among others, and maintains a regular relationship with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and the German National Youth Orchestra.

Each season, the NAC Orchestra features world-class artists such as the newly appointed Artist-in-Residence James Ehnes, Angela Hewitt, Joshua Bell, Xian Zhang, Gabriela Montero, Stewart Goodyear, Jan Lisiecki, and Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds. As one of the most accessible, inclusive, and collaborative orchestras in the world, the NAC Orchestra uses music as a universal language to communicate the deepest of human emotions and connect people through shared experiences.

Alexander Shelley succeeded Pinchas Zukerman as Music Director of Canada’s NAC Orchestra in September 2015. The ensemble has since been praised as being “transformed... hungry, bold, and unleashed” (Ottawa Citizen) and Shelley’s programming credited for turning the orchestra into “one of the more audacious in North America” (Maclean’s).

Shelley is a champion of Canadian creation; recent hallmarks include the multimedia projects Life Reflected and UNDISRUPTED,and three major new ballets in partnership with NAC Dance for Encount3rs. He is passionate about arts education and nurturing the next generation of musicians. He is an Ambassador for Ottawa’s OrKidstra, a charitable social development program that teaches children life skills through making music together.

Alexander Shelley is also the Principal Associate Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and, starting with the 2024–2025 season, Artistic and Music Director of Artis-Naples and the Naples Philharmonic in Florida, USA. In the spring of 2019, he led the NAC Orchestra on its critically acclaimed 50th Anniversary European tour, and in 2017, he led the Orchestra in a tour across Canada, celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary. Most recently, he led the Orchestra in its first performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 30 years.

He has made eight recordings with the NAC Orchestra, including the JUNO-nominated New Worlds, Life Reflected, ENCOUNT3RS, The Bounds of Our Dreams, and the acclaimed Clara, Robert, Johannes four-album series, all with Canadian label Analekta.

Depuis, l’ensemble a été qualifié de « transformé », « passionné », « ambitieux » et « déchaîné » (Ottawa Citizen), et classé parmi les plus audacieux en Amérique du Nord (magazine Maclean’s) pour sa programmation.

Champion de la création au Canada, Shelley a signé récemment le projet multimédia Réflexions sur la vie, INCONDITIONNEL et RENCONTR3S, une collaboration avec Danse CNA comportant trois nouveaux ballets d’envergure.

Shelley s’attache à cultiver les talents de la relève : il est notamment un ambassadeur d’OrKidstra, un programme de développement social qui, à travers la musique, aide les jeunes d’Ottawa à acquérir des compétences essentielles.

Alexander Shelley est également premier chef d’orchestre associé du Royal Philharmonic Orchestra de Londres, et, à partir de la saison 2024-2025, directeur artistique et musical d’Artis-Naples et de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Naples en Floride (États-Unis). Il a dirigé l’Orchestre du CNA au printemps 2019 à l’occasion d’une tournée européenne très applaudie soulignant le 50^e anniversaire de l’ensemble et, en 2017, dans le cadre d’une tournée aux quatre coins du Canada pour célébrer le 150^e anniversaire du pays. Plus récemment, l’Orchestre a donné, sous sa baguette, son premier concert en 30 ans au Carnegie Hall de New York.

Following three successful seasons (1996-1999) as Acting Principal Trumpet of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Karen Donnelly was unanimously appointed Principal Trumpet in October 1999, and continues to enjoy each year with this wonderful ensemble.

A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Karen picked up a trumpet for the first time in her elementary school band program and she was hooked. Her formal training includes a Bachelor of Arts in Music program at the University of Regina and later a Master's of Music from McGill University.

Karen held the position of Principal Trumpet with Orchestra London (Canada) from 1994-1996, and performed with many ensembles in southwestern Ontario during her time there.

Since she burst on the Ottawa scene in 1996, Ms. Donnelly has done concerts and interviews for CBC (French and English), performances with the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Rideau Lakes Brass Quintet, and the large ensemble, Capital BrassWorks. In 2008, Capital Brass Works released its third album, Gabriel’s Sister featuring Ms. Donnelly as soloist.

Karen has been featured with professional orchestras, community amateur orchestras, and many local school bands. These include the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra, Kington Symphony, Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London, Hannaford Silver Street Band, Maple Leaf Brass Band, Parkdale Orchestra and the Regina Catholic Schools Honour Band.

Music education has always been, and continues to be, very close to Karen’s heart. Her work with the Rideau Lakes Brass Quintet and Capital BrassWorks creates opportunities for educational concerts and workshops in schools. Through the NAC Music Education programs, Karen has given master classes in Switzerland, Mexico, China, United States, United Kingdom and Canada from coast to coast. Ms. Donnelly joined the teaching staff at the University of Ottawa in 2002, and since 2009, Karen has been assisting with the Leadingnote OrKidstra program.

Après trois saisons couronnées de succès à titre de trompette solo par intérim de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts (1996-1999), Karen Donnelly a fait l’unanimité dans le choix du titulaire permanent du poste en octobre 1999. Elle se dit toujours ravie d’évoluer au sein de ce merveilleux ensemble.

Originaire de Regina en Saskatchewan, elle a eu le coup de foudre pour la trompette dès qu’elle s’est initiée à l’instrument dans la fanfare de son école, au primaire. Elle a un Baccalauréat ès arts en musique de l’Université de Regina et une Maîtrise en musique de l’Université McGill.

Mme Donnelly a été trompette solo d’Orchestra London (Canada) de 1994 à 1996, période où elle s’est produite avec de nombreux ensembles dans le sud-ouest de l’Ontario.

Depuis son arrivée à Ottawa en 1996, elle a pris part à de nombreux concerts et a donné des entrevues sur les ondes de Radio-Canada et CBC Radio, et s’est produite au Festival de musique de chambre d’Ottawa, avec le Quintette de cuivres Rideau Lakes et avec le grand ensemble Capital BrassWorks. Elle est d’ailleurs soliste sur le troisième album de Capital BrassWorks, paru en 2008 sous le titre Gabriel’s Sister.

La trompettiste s’est produite avec divers groupes allant d’orchestres professionnels à des harmonies scolaires, en passant par des ensembles communautaires de musiciens amateurs. C’est ainsi qu’on a pu l’applaudir avec l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts, le Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra, les orchestres symphoniques de Kingston et de Saskatoon, Orchestra London, le Hannaford Silver Street Band, le Maple Leaf Brass Band, le Parkdale Orchestra et le Regina Catholic Schools Honour Band.

L’éducation musicale continue d’occuper une place importante dans sa carrière. Sa collaboration avec le Quintette de cuivres Rideau Lakes et Capital BrassWorks donne lieu à des concerts éducatifs et des ateliers dans les écoles. Dans le cadre du programme Vive la musique du CNA, Karen Donnelly a donné des ateliers de maître en Suisse, au Mexique, en Chine, aux États-Unis, au Royaume-Uni et dans toutes les régions du Canada. Elle enseigne depuis 2002 à l’Université d’Ottawa et collabore depuis 2009 avec le programme Leadingnote d’OrKidstra.

Founded in 1974 by Christopher Jackson, Réjean Poirier, and Hélène Dugal, the mission of the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM) is to perform sacred and secular early music, with a particular focus on choral works composed before 1750, to share the vitality, sensuality, and emotional depth of early music. Directed by Andrew McAnerney since 2015, SMAM is composed of 12 to 18 singers chosen for the remarkable clarity and purity of their voices. For over half a century, SMAM has produced a remarkable discography. Its new recording L’Homme armé is devoted to the early masters of Franco-Flemish polyphony, and was released on the ATMA Classique label (February 2021).

Acclamé pour ses « textures enveloppantes et ses sonorités lumineuses et envoûtantes », le Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM) s’est taillé, depuis presque cinquante ans, une place de choix dans le milieu musical du Québec et du Canada. Fondé en 1974 par Christopher Jackson, Réjean Poirier, et Hélène Dual et placé aujourd’hui sous la direction musicale d’Andrew McAnerney, le SMAM est formé de 12 à 18 chanteurs professionnels choisis pour la pureté et la clarté de leurs voix. Le SMAM a produit au fil d’un demi-siècle une remarquable discographie. Le dernier enregistrement, L’Homme armé, est consacré aux maîtres franco-flamands de la polyphonie. Il est paru sous etiquette ATMA Classique (février 2021).
