French trumpeter and composer Airelle Besson studied under Wynton Marsalis and has played with, among others, Charlie Haden and Riccardo del Fra. Her education began at the age of seven, and led eventually to her winning the First Prize in Jazz at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in 2002, when she was 24. Her combination of experience and training have left her self-assured enough to write long and lingering melodic lines that a more timid composer might consider risky. Forming an ongoing duo with Brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras, she has carefully paired two instruments that do not necessarily seem like they would match each other well. The result is music with its own unique combination of composition and tonal texture.
