Since 2017, a dozen authors from four continents have been joining forces and pens (or keyboards) to patiently and collectively invent an astonishing rewrite of Goethe’s Faust I and II. Episode after episode, each unique voice draws on its strengths to help weave an epic that transposes the story of the ambitious Doctor Faustus and Mephistopheles into today’s world.
Reflecting contemporary issues ranging from the crisis of knowledge to the inexorable rise of sea levels, by way of transhumanism, Si vous voulez de la lumière shapes a collaborative story about a world in crisis but also in full reinvention. Nourished by the powerful human encounters that have marked its process from the outset, this collective creation brings together performers, amateur choirs, instrumentalists, and opera singers from diverse backgrounds.
Through stage devices that juxtapose the real with the irrational, Les songes turbulents scrutinize the unconscious mechanisms of our daily behaviour and investigate the unspoken desires and social norms that influence our actions. By staging plays by authors such as Müller, Kane, Racine and Lepage, they convey existential reflections through powerful writing, where the political is linked to the poetic and where humanity is depicted in all its complexity and contradictions.
The company aims to encourage a dialogue between artistic languages from different continents, in order to create one-of-a-kind productions.
The National Creation Fund’s investment of $155,000 will support several additional elements of the project’s final development process, with a significant focus on text and dramaturgy, including a dramaturgical residency. The Fund will also support several workshops and a residency with the creative team, professional performers and amateur choirs.
