CELEBRATE CANADA DAY AT THE NAC!
National Capital’s own Kellylee Evans performs with the NAC Orchestra for two concerts on Canada Day

The NAC opens its door all day, rain or shine, to offer FREE concerts and activities for this annual celebration

May 29, 2014 – OTTAWA (Canada) – The National Arts Centre will be the place to be on Canada Day, offering a full slate of free family-friendly concerts and activities on Tuesday, July 1. The day’s events will celebrate the country’s birthday with a host of artists from the Nation’s Capital. Canada Day at the NAC is supported by Giant Tiger Stores Limited.

The morning kicks off with the annual Unisong concert at 10 a.m., this year featuring 72 local and over 250 visiting choristers from across the country, led by Kellie Walsh, Artistic Director of Shallaway-Newfoundland and Labrador Youth in Chorus. The day of celebration culminates with special afternoon and evening concerts in the NAC’s Southam Hall, as the National Arts Centre Orchestra, conducted by Alain Trudel, are joined by JUNO Award-winner singer-songwriter Kellylee Evans, who will host and perform both concerts. Infectious dancing moves and kitschy quirks by Ottawa’s The PepTides will animate the lobby stage through the afternoon. Learn to dance hip hop with the ever popular Culture Shock on the NAC Terrace –guaranteed fun and a great workout for kids all ages! Follow the sound of the Loyal Kigabiro Burundi Drummers,a troupe of men, woman and kids that will give a high- energy outdoor performance on Lawrence Freiman lane. Also on Canada Day, the NAC will open a public exhibit in the main NAC Foyer featuring backstage memorabilia and noteworthy historical objects in honour of the NAC’s 45th anniversary.

The voice of jazz singer beloved Kellylee Evans, who has appeared on many occasions on the NAC’s stages, is considered one of the most beautiful of her generation.  Since the release of her latest album "I Remember When," Kellylee has been on an intense tour schedule that includes the Paris Olympia, as well as dates in Whitehorse, Berlin and Istanbul over the next month. She brings jazz to all audiences by featuring songs by the likes of Eminem, John Legend and Kanye West. For the very first time, her back-up band will be none other than the NAC Orchestra, as well as over 325 Unisong choristers performing Kellylee’s own material in new orchestra arrangements commissioned by the NAC, on the national stage.

“What a dream come true to return to the NAC to play with the NAC Orchestra on Canada Day,” she said. “There's nothing quite like singing in front of an orchestra. The swell of the music, the camaraderie with world-class musicians -- it's a life changing experience. I'm so excited!

The NAC’s Canada Day tradition attracts thousands of visitors each year and provides families visiting the activities on Parliament Hill an oasis of fun.
