Ottawa, Ontario, February 4, 2014 – In December 2000, Enron was the seventh largest corporation in the United States and was voted “America’s Most Innovative Company” by Forbes Magazine. By December 2001, the company had filed for the largest bankruptcy in corporate history. Employees lost pensions as executives cashed in stock worth well over $100 million. Enron was served with the largest class-action suit ever brought against a corporation.

How this happened is the subject of the NAC English Theatre production, ENRON, by
Lucy Prebble − a scorching exposé of corporate madness that is both corrosively funny and exuberantly theatrical.

In what has become an exceptionally successful season for English Theatre, ENRON continues the trend of overwhelming ticket demand. In response, an additional performance has been scheduled for Monday, February 24 at 8 pm.

Based on real-life events and using music, movement and video, the infamous Enron scandal (greed + ambition + fraud = financial ruin) is depicted as sprawling fantasy mixed with savage comedy. It’s lucid, lurid, fast-paced, and flamboyantly staged, with incisive dialogue, and clever visual metaphors.

The people of Enron, brought to life by the English Theatre 2013-14 Ensemble, are double-dealing, desperate, lying-and-denying, larger-than-life characters – who ultimately pay the price for their sins.

The collapse of Enron changed not just the lives of those involved – it changed the face of American business.
