Sets All-Time National Arts Centre ATTENDANCE RECORD 

THANK YOU OTTAWA!

Ottawa, ON, December 19, 2013 – The National Arts Centre is thrilled to announce that the English Theatre production of the classic musical, The Sound of Music, has now sold the most tickets of any NAC-programmed performance in the organization’s 44-year history. Tickets sales are now over 24,800 (and counting!), well surpassing the previous record of 22,743 set by the 2001 NAC Dance presentation of The Nutcracker by The National Ballet of Canada.

Ottawa audiences have been so swept up in the magic of Maria throughout this holiday season that a two-week extension including a benefit performance on January 2, 2014 was added in response to such unprecedented demand.  Great seats for the 33-performance run, now extended thru January 4, are still available. 

"The success of The Sound of Music demonstrates what a remarkable team that NAC English Theatre Artistic Director Jillian Keiley and The Sound of Music Director Joey Tremblay have put together on this show. The cast is superb, and people are embracing our actors, who come from all over Canada, during the holiday season. It's our Christmas gift to Canadians, and they are giving back by coming in such large numbers," said Peter Herrndorf, the President and CEO of the National Arts Centre.

With a nod to the golden age of musical theatre, this special live production featuring the 2013-14 Ensemble, and sponsored by Trinity Development Group, has had audiences tapping their toes to some of the most memorable and well-loved songs of all time including "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi" and "So Long, Farewell." As the record attendance numbers show, The Sound of Music has become Ottawa’s favourite thing this holiday season.

A special benefit matinee performance has been scheduled for January 2^nd with net proceeds going to the Actors’ Fund of Canada, PAL (Performing Arts Lodge) Ottawa, and the Ottawa Food Bank as part of the NAC’s Share the Spirit program.

Share the Spirit

With the support of community partners, the National Arts Centre’s Share the Spirit program, presented by Sun Life Financial, brings the magic of live performance to deserving children and families in the Ottawa area. The program helps families who, for economic or health reasons, may not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy live performances at the National Arts Centre during the holiday season and throughout the year. The NAC is thrilled to include this special matinee performance of The Sound of Music under the Share the Spirit umbrella.
