Maestro Pinchas Zukerman welcomes pianist Yefim Bronfman to the National Arts Centre, as the two musicians perform with the National Arts Centre Orchestra Wednesday, February 6 and Thursday, February 7.

The two are lifelong friends, having met when they were in their teens. Having reached the highest heights of the international classical music realm, the two have developed a musical communication, with years of performance experience to be witnessed in this brilliant exploration of beautiful Brahms melodies, onstage.

Maestro Pinchas Zukerman: “Fima, I’ve known since he was 15. It’s been an unbelievable experience, a wonderful experience to be with him, to work with him, to play with him; it’s just been amazing.”

JOHANNES BRAHMS
Born in Hamburg, May 7, 1833
Died in Vienna, April 3, 1897
Two Songs for Mezzo-soprano, Viola and Piano, Op. 91

In these two gorgeous songs, Brahms incorporated prominent parts for his favourite string instrument, the viola, and as such they constitute the composer’s only chamber music to combine instruments and voice. They were published in 1884 as Op. 91, immediately following the Third Symphony, but the “Geistliches Wiegenlied” (Sacred lullaby) was actually written much earlier and revised.
