Building community through music:
The National Arts Centre Orchestra returns to Prince Edward Island for the first time since 2002

OTTAWA—Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra will celebrate Atlantic Canada in a dynamic performance and education tour that will build community through music with nine concerts reaching 10,000 individuals in all four Atlantic Provinces, and provide an opportunity to work and perform with some of the region’s most promising young musicians in 80 music education events from Nov. 13-25, 2011.

In Charlottetown, the highlight of the NAC’s visit will be a major concert at The Confederation Centre for the Arts on Thursday November 17th at 7:30 p.m. featuring one of Canada’s brightest young talents, 16 year old pianist Jan Lisiecki from Calgary. The concert, led by Montreal conductor Julien Kuerti, a former Resident Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, now enjoying an exciting international career, will include 5 young apprentices from the NAC’s Institute of Orchestral Studies. Charlottetown’s own award-winning choir, the Confederation Centre Youth Chorus will open the evening with a performance at 6:45 p.m. in the Confederation Centre lobby.

The Atlantic Canada Tour is designed to promote the careers of young artists who have been mentored by members of the NAC’s Orchestra over the past ten years through extensive education programming offered across the country. In every city throughout the tour, the National Arts Centre is hoping to meet some of the best young musicians from Atlantic Canada through community and education outreach.

Canadian artists featured on the Atlantic Canada Tour reflect the long-lasting relationships the NAC builds with emerging artists. The NAC first got to know Julian Kuerti at the NAC’s Summer Music Institute. Julian went on to conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra and today he is the tour’s Guest Conductor. And then there is Jan Lisiecki, who last year signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon.  NAC Music Director and Conductor Pinchas Zukerman first met Jan when he was 10 in Calgary at a masterclass the NAC offered during its tour of Western Canada. Jan Lisiecki is an alumnus of the NAC’s Summer Music Institute, and is the featured soloist on the Atlantic tour and will no doubt delight the audience in Charlottetown on November 17th

In Charlottetown, on Thursday November 17th the highlights of educational tour include:

  • Masterclasses conducted by three members of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Camille Churchfield, Kimball Sykes, and Steven van Gulik at the University of Prince Edward Island
  • Soloist Jan Lisiecki will do a musical chat with music students organized through the PEI Registered Music Teachers Association
  • Canadian Composer, John Estacio will have a pre-concert lecture in the Boardroom of the Confederation Centre for the Arts at 18:40 p.m.
  • The Confederation Centre Youth Chorus will perform at 18:45 p.m. at the Confederation Centre for the Arts

Repertoire for the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s concert conducted by Julian Kuerti at 8:00 p.m. at the Confederation Centre for the Arts will include:

  • Brio: Toccata and Fantasy for Orchestra, a new work in memory of Malcolm Forsyth composed especially for the tour by Canadian composer John Estacio, winner of the National Arts Centre Award for Canadian composers. Mr. Estacio will give pre-concert talks throughout the tour as well as composition classes;
  • Piano Concerto no. 20 by Mozart, with soloist Jan Lisiecki;
  • Symphony no. 1 by Brahms, with five apprentices from the NAC’s Institute for Orchestral Studies;
