ANNOUNCING A NEW PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE NAC FRENCH THEATRE AND THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FILMS ON ART (FIFA)
While the current situation prevents our getting together, the National Arts Centre (NAC) French Theatre has chosen to partner with the world-renowned Montreal-based International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) to offer an online screening of two films: L’océan électro and Les ballets de ci de là.
Selected with input from the NAC French Theatre team, these two films reflect the spirit of NAC French Theatre’s 2019–2020 season. They were scheduled to be screened in conjunction with the plays Dans le bleu and Requiem pour L., which could not be presented at the NAC. During this confinement period, French Theatre wanted to offer audiences a different way to discover the world of the cancelled shows through a newsletter entitled La sentinelle, named after the ghost light that is left energized on the stage of an empty theatre. The success of the 38th edition of the FIFA, presented online, made this virtual collaboration possible and allowed the FIFA to reconnect with film buffs everywhere.
NAC French Theatre audiences will have free access to the film L’océan électro from May 7 to 14, and to the documentary Les ballets de ci de là from June 4 to 11 as they continue their discovery of the worlds of Magali Lemèle and Alain Platel.

Romain Delahaye, a.k.a. Molecule, is a composer of electronic music who has come up with a madcap plan: to spend five weeks aboard a fishing trawler to write a new album. He hopes that a few storms will help unleash his creativity. Searching for sources of inspiration, he sets up a mini-studio in his cabin and explores the ship’s nooks and crannies, recording the various sounds. The skipper of the Joseph Roty II and its crew, on the other hand, are preoccupied with catching fish in the icy waters of the Irish Sea. As the holds begin to fill with blue whiting and an album takes shape, the captain and composer Romain fill out their daily logs. Their different views on the ocean intertwine, creating an unexpected meeting of music and fishing. |
LES BALLETS DE CI DE LÀ Directed by Alain Platel Belgium, France | 2006 | 110 minutes In French and Flemish.

Through this documentary, Alain Platel celebrates the essence of human singularities which have fuelled Les Ballets C de la B for twenty years. Who are the dancers of Les Ballets C de la B? Where do they come from? And how do they transcend life on stage? An impressionistic film, in the heart of a unique company in the live entertainment industry. An emotional journey that makes us share the artistic and human adventure of Les Ballets C de la B.
