The world-renown violinist and violist gives his first concert of the NAC’s 18-19 season on November 21 and 22 in Zukerman, Mozart, Elgar.

 

November 21, 2018 – OTTAWA (Canada) – The National Arts Centre is pleased to welcome back to its stage Conductor Emeritus, Pinchas Zukerman. He is set to conduct and play the viola in Zukerman, Mozart, Elgar on November 21 and 22.

Following a 16 year tenure as Music Director of the NAC Orchestra, Mr. Zukerman’s role as Conductor Emeritus, sees him return to perform at the NAC in several programs per season, and continue his role Artistic Director of the NAC’s Young Artists’ Program— a program he founded in 1998 to support the professional development of promising young musicians from Canada and around the world.

Mr. Zukerman is featured in two programs in the NAC Orchestra’s 2018–19 season: in addition to Zukerman, Mozart Elgar, he will conduct and perform as violin soloist in Zukerman plays Bruch in February 2019.

 

ZUKERMAN, MOZART, ELGAR

Audiences can expect a quintessentially Pinchas flair to the Zukerman, Mozart Elgar program. The concert celebrates strings and includes music with which Mr. Zukerman has a long and devoted history: Chausson’s Poème for Violin and Orchestra; Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante for violin, viola and orchestra in E-flat major; and Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, “Enigma Variations”. 

Internationally renowned German violinist Viviane Hagner— first showcased at the NAC almost two decades ago as a brilliant young artist and student of Pinchas Zukerman—is featured in Chausson’s Poème. Mr. Zukerman then takes up the viola to play Mozart’s delightful Sinfonia Concertante, with Hagner on violin.

In an exciting new development, Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi, fresh from a thrilling first prize award at the 2018 Joseph Joachim Violin Competition, will also join Mr. Zukerman and the Orchestra onstage for a special appearance. A native of Victoria, BC, Mr. Chooi is a Young Artists’ Program alumnus and has launched a promising international career.
 

ABOUT PINCHAS ZUKERMAN

Pinchas Zukerman has remained a classical music phenomenon, with a celebrated career encompassing five decades. His prodigious technique and unwavering artistic standards are a marvel to audiences and critics.  He was Music Director of the NAC Orchestra from 1999–2015, and currently serves as its Conductor Emeritus. While Music Director, he established the NAC Institute for Orchestra Studies and the Summer Music Institute, and he remains Artistic Director of its Young Artist Program.  

2018-19 marks his tenth season as Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and his fourth as Artist-in-Association with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.  Mr. Zukerman leads tours with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and joins the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as soloist on tour in Europe. 

Born in Tel Aviv in 1948, Pinchas Zukerman came to America in 1962 where he studied at The Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian. He has been awarded the Medal of Arts, the Isaac Stern Award for Artistic Excellence and was a mentor in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

A devoted pedagogue, Mr. Zukerman chairs the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music. His enthusiasm for teaching has resulted in innovative programs in London, New York, China, Israel and Canada.
