ALONZO KING LINES BALLET RETURNS TO THE NAC WITH NEW CREATION, IN CELEBRATION OF THE COMPANY’S 35TH ANNIVERSARY
NAC Dance is thrilled to welcome once again the San Francisco-based company Alonzo King LINES Ballet, led by the world-renowned dancer and choreographer Alonzo King. In honour of the company’s 35th anniversary, Alonzo collaborated with the classical tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and composer Sabir Khan on a dynamic fusion of rhythm and movement to showcase the company’s brilliant dancers. Entitled SUTRA, which means string or thread, this piece premiered on April 6 in San Francisco.
Alonzo King has been called “a visionary choreographer, who is altering the way we look and think about movement.” Alonzo King LINES Ballet has been guided by his unique artistic vision since 1982, and King has worked in the repertories of companies such as the Royal Swedish Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Ballet Béjart, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, San Francisco Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and many others.
“Alonzo King has been a beacon for contemporary ballet in the US and beyond for over 35 years; a visionary choreographer and director who continues to inspire his dancers, collaborators and audiences wherever the company performs,” says Cathy Levy, Executive Producer of NAC Dance. “Always curious, and never one to rest on his laurels, Mr. King’s innovative works for the highly celebrated LINES Ballet investigate and elevate the human spirit with beauty and precision.”
