NAC to Unveil First New Usher Uniform Design Since 1988
On October 3, at the National Arts Centre Gala featuring Diana Ross, NAC ushers will be wearing a new uniform for the first time in 30 years.
Designed by renowned Canadian fashion designer Shawn Hewson of Bustle Clothing, the new uniform is stylish, contemporary and comfortable. Charcoal grey with accents of black and NAC purple, it includes a custom-designed shirt with a subtle motif that recalls shapes found all over the NAC.
"When I first walked into the new NAC building, I looked up and saw the beautiful, hexagonal ceiling coffers," said Hewson. "Right away I saw an opportunity to integrate that design into the uniform."
Hewson also designed the uniform to be worn by people of all genders, with comfort for all body types in mind. Its pieces include a jacket, pants, skirt, ties and a sweater. Those elements can be mixed and matched as desired. The various pieces also allow the ushers to be more formal or casual depending on the performance, for instance a classical music concert versus a rock show.
There have been five NAC uniforms between 1969 and 2018, with the previous one in use since 1988. Hewson said he’s confident the new uniform will stand the test of time. “Fashions fade, but style is eternal.”
USHERS “LOVE” NEW UNIFORM
The feedback from the NAC’s 70 ushers has been very positive.
“I love the new look,” said Suzanne Charron, who has been wearing and maintaining the same uniform since she first started as an usher in 1992. “The cut is elegant, modern and timeless. It really suits the more welcoming and inclusive approach of the new NAC. I know the team is going to feel great wearing it.”
The public can see the new uniforms at the NAC Gala, or at any upcoming performance.
