NAC Dance is happy to welcome the Barcelona-based company La Veronal, founded by internationally renowned choreographer Marcos Morau, with their piece Siena. Over the years, the company has created a series of works, using a country or city as a starting point to create an analogy between dance and geography. This piece dives into the history of Italian art, a journey that begins in the Renaissance, when human beings developed a new and modern sense of self.

“The work Siena is not “about” that place, but rather uses the famous Italian city as a jumping-off point to explore the concept of the human body itself, the relationship of art to human beings, and the body as a container of knowledge over time. The result is a layered piece of dance and theatre that is visually surprising and dynamic,” says Cathy Levy, Executive Producer for NAC Dance.

Morau founded La Veronal in 2005, and works with a group of artists from different artistic backgrounds such as dance, film, photography and literature. The company is on a constant search for new means of expression and cultural references – mainly in cinema, literature, music and photography – to create a strong narrative structure.

“Marcos Morau is clearly one of the driving forces behind today’s new choreographic scene. Since launching his company La Veronal in his 20s (2005), his multidisciplinary approach to choreographic ventures has challenged and delighted audiences far and wide,” adds Cathy Levy.

Siena is performed for two nights in a row in the Babs Asper Theatre on February 2 and 3. The duration is approximately 65 minutes with no intermission.
