The NAC's Music Alive Program with Inuk Singer/Songwriter Saali Keelan Come to Cape Dorset this Weekend
Inuk singer/songwriter Charles "Saali" Keelan will be leading community workshops and coaching young performers at the Kinngait Performing Arts Club clubhouse and Sam Pudlat School in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, as part of the National Arts Centre’s Music Alive Program from Friday November 13 to Sunday November 15.
On Saturday, November 14, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saali will lead workshops for young aspiring artists at Cape Dorset’s Sam Pudlat School. At 7:30 p.m. Saali, along with Iqaluit band The Jerry Cans, will headline a concert at Sam Pudlat School to raise funds to help replace performing arts resources and equipment destroyed by fire last September at Cape Dorset’s Peter Pitseolak High School. Tickets are $10 ($15 at the door). Free for elders and children under 12.
ABOUT THE NAC’S MUSIC ALIVE PROGRAM
Since its creation in 2006, the National Arts Centre’s Music Alive Program has been increasing access to music education in rural and remote communities across Canada, visiting more than 525 schools and reaching more than 85,500 students, teachers, and community members. The program focuses on promoting musical and cultural diversity through our Classical, Indigenous and Cross-Cultural Streams. MAP offers FREE music education workshops to public and band-operated schools, primarily in underserved communities throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nunavut.
Program partners in Nunavut include the Alianait Arts Festival , the Iqaluit Music Society, and many local schools as well as local cultural and recreational organizations.
