THE EXTRAORDINARY TANZTHEATER WUPPERTAL PINA BAUSCH RETURNS TO THE NAC WITH VOLLMOND – A DAZZLING CANADIAN PREMIERE – ON NOVEMBER 7-8

Vollmond (Full Moon) is a masterstroke, one of the legendary Pina Bausch’s most celebrated works. A lush expression of the rapturous effects of the full moon, Vollmond dazzles with wit, humour, and lush, engaging songs. Casting a keen eye on love and lust, Pina Bausch’s ingenious choreography explores courtship and conflict, the eternal battle between the sexes, and simple humanity. Designed by longtime collaborator Peter Pabst, Vollmond is anchored by a giant lunar-like slab of rock, and crescendos of water – water everywhere, pouring from above, thrown in wide arcs, flowing across the scene, saturating the dancers’ sensual and breathless performances. Vollmond is truly beguiling: dance-theatre at its absolute best. Pina Bausch Tanztheatre Wuppertal performs Vollmond in Southam Hall of the National Arts Centre on Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8 at 8 p.m.

Prominently featured in the film Pina (2011) by Wim Wenders, Vollmond was described by Judith Mackrell in London’s The Guardian (February 26, 2013) as “… the kind of carnivalesque celebration that only Bausch could orchestrate, teetering between ecstasy and danger.”

ABOUT PINA BAUSCH TANZTHEATER WUPPERTAL
Pina Bausch (1940-2009) was the foremost choreographer of our time. In 1973, Pina Bausch was appointed director of dance for the Wuppertal (Germany) theatres and her mixture of dance and theatre – the players danced, spoke, sang, cried, laughed – was wholly unfamiliar. Thus began an international choreographic revolution which was to emancipate and redefine dance throughout the world, inspiring choreographers and influencing both theatre and classical ballet. Pina Bausch made a universal need the key subject of her work: the need for love, intimacy, and emotional security. She incorporated highly diverse cultural influences and also chose to represent reality; her pieces relate to things every member of the audience knows and has experienced. For 36 years, Pina Bausch shaped the work of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, creating an oeuvre which casts an unerring gaze at reality, while simultaneously giving us the courage to be true to our own wishes and desires. Writing in theguardian.com (March 30, 2010), Sanjoy Roy wrote of her “Pina Bausch was the high priestess of dance theatre whose penetrating vision reached both the heights and the hell of human nature. Bausch's works are not meant to be watched: they're meant to be experienced. Surrender to her vision and you'll find that they can flay your soul.” So many dance, theatre, and opera works onstage today owe her such a sizable debt that it’s impossible to overstate the influence of the violently charged, dreamlike worlds and searing, psychologically raw choreography of Pina Bausch.
