NAC to “Light Up Purple" on Mental Health Day Saturday October 10th
– The National Arts Centre (NAC) is pleased to participate in the World Health Organization’s Mental Health Day. The Amanda Todd Legacy Society has reached out to organizations across Canada to “Light Up Purple” on Saturday, October 10th, 2015, to raise awareness about the issue of mental illness and the impact it has on the lives of so many in our communities.
This Saturday, the NAC will light up its building starting at dusk to show support for this important initiative. Canadians are being encouraged to wear purple, light a purple candle, or to shine purple lights in their homes, offices, or workplaces to raise awareness about World Mental Health Day.
World Mental Health Day provides an opportunity for stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work and what more needs to be done to support people suffering from this serious health issue.
Three years after the death of Amanda Todd – the 15 year-old from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia – the NAC is proud to support this initiative. Ms. Todd committed suicide after suffering for months from cyberbullying. Her tragic death inspires us to work together through the arts to remember her life and legacy.
