Institute for Orchestral Studies Free Chamber Music Concert – November 7, 2014
OTTAWA (Canada) — The Apprentices of the 8th annual Institute for Orchestral Studies make their Ottawa chamber music debut on Friday, November 7th at 19h30 in the Auditorium at the National Gallery of Canada. The Apprentices will have just returned from accompanying the National Arts Centre Orchestra on its Tour of Remembrance and Education in the United Kingdom.
Youth is the theme of this chamber concert performed by these five talented string musicians in works by W.A. Mozart, Sir Ernest MacMillan and Antonin Dvořák. The young prodigy Mozart composed this ever popular Divertimento for Strings in Salzburg at the age of 16. The String Quartet in C minor, written by the 21-year-old MacMillan while a prisoner-of-war in Germany, is a jewel of the Canadian String Quartet repertoire, while the Quintet in G major by the then 33-year-old Dvořák displays his fervent nationalistic style as a young Czech composer.
