The National Arts Centre Corporation (NAC) was established in 1966 pursuant to the National Arts Centre Act and began operating the Centre in 1969. The NAC reports to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage.
The Corporation is deemed, under Section 15 of the National Arts Centre Act, to be a registered charity within the meaning of that expression in the Income Tax Act.
The National Arts Centre (NAC) is a federal cultural organization dedicated primarily to developing and showcasing the performing arts in the National Capital Region and across Canada. Home to the acclaimed National Arts Centre Orchestra, the NAC is a multidisciplinary performing arts centre that features classical music, dance, English- and French-language theatre, regional programming, special events and variety shows. The NAC takes part in co-productions with other organizations throughout the country, hosts festivals, and, through its new technologies and international tours, reaches out to audiences across Canada and around the world. It is at the forefront of youth and educational activities, supporting programmes for young and emerging artists and programmes for young audiences and producing resources and study materials for teachers.
In furtherance of its objectives, the Corporation may arrange for and sponsor performing arts activities at the centre; encourage and assist in the development of performing arts companies resident at the Centre; arrange for or sponsor radio and television broadcasts and the screening of films in the Centre; provide accommodation at the Centre, on such terms and conditions as the Corporation may fix, for national and local organizations whose objectives include the development and encouragement of the performing arts in Canada; and, at the request of the Government of Canada or the Canada Council for the Arts, arrange for performances elsewhere in Canada by performing arts companies, whether resident or non-resident in Canada, and arrange for performances outside Canada by performing arts companies resident in Canada.
The various artistic disciplines are responsible for the production and presentation of the performing arts on the Centre's stages and elsewhere. The departments that represent the various areas of the performing arts offered at the National Arts Centre are Music, including Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, English Theatre, French Theatre, Dance, Community Programming, Special Events, Variety, Festivals and Youth and Educational Programming.
Support services to the artistic disciplines are provided by several departments: Marketing, Archives and Exhibitions, Production, New Media, Patron Services, Box Office and Subscription Office.
The Music Department operates the National Arts Centre (NAC) Orchestra which represents the central thrust of the department's work. The NAC Orchestra serves audiences locally, nationally, and internationally with performances and programming that help deepen appreciation and understanding of the performing arts. The NAC Orchestra supports Canadian composers by commissioning the creation of new works, repeat performances, and by headlining Canadian music on its tours and recordings. The NAC Orchestra produces various festivals and series of concerts devoted to orchestral music in a range of repertoire including classical, popular, contemporary, and family. As well, it performs in the pit for NAC ballet presentations and opera productions of Opera Lyra Ottawa. As part of its national role, it performs on tour across Canada and internationally and provides a range of programming via Internet, CD and radio. It is a leading advocate for education with highly-developed programming targeting talented young and emerging artists, the general school-age population and classroom teachers. This department manages the international NAC Summer Music Institute which includes the Young Artists Programme, Conductors Programme and Composers Programme. It provides additional training and showcasing opportunities through the NAC Institute for Orchestral Studies, NAC Orchestra Bursary Competition, NAC Debut concert series and through masterclasses with international artists as well as NAC Orchestra musicians. From its very beginnings in 1969, the National Arts Centre (NAC) French Theatre has maintained a high artistic standard. Over the years French Theatre audiences have come to expect theatre that is in step with the times; theatre that reflects and responds to the human condition in a spirit of free exchange and fraternity; theatre that is connected to emerging dramatic trends both at home and abroad. This artistic trajectory is expressed through national and international partnerships, selected touring productions, and French Theatre co-productions that convey distinctive viewpoints and voices.
