In Timmins, Mike Metawabin collaborated with Simon Ambühl and Dr. Manuel Menrath to create a powerful audiovisual experience. His poem, “Hounds of St. Anne’s,” was paired with music to reflect on the deep impact of residential schools. The project evolved into Songs of the Land, a transatlantic collaboration blending poetry, music, and visual storytelling to address cultural trauma and healing.
I was born and raised in the First Nation community of Fort Albany located in northern Ontario along the shores of western James Bay. I was acclaimed as Deputy Grand Chief for Nishnawbe Aski Nation in August 2024. I have also been Chairman of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Services board of directors for almost 20 years. I served four terms as Chief in my home community of Fort Albany, where I was born and raised. I am a father and a grandfather, my biggest and best accomplishment that I take seriously. I am fluent in my language, I am a residential school survivor and I am committed to working for and with my people in the Treaty 9 territory.
Membre de la Première Nation de Fort Albany dans le nord de l’Ontario, Mike Metatawabin a grandi sur la côte ouest de la baie James. Il vient d’être élu grand chef adjoint de la Nation nishnawbe-aski en août 2024. Auparavant, il a présidé le comité d’administration du Service de police de la Nation nishnawbe-aski pendant près de 20 ans. Il a également été pendant quatre mandats chef de Fort Albany, sa communauté natale. Ses enfants et ses petits-enfants sont sa plus grande fierté et sa plus belle réussite, et il prend ce rôle très au sérieux. The artist Simon Ambühl, who resides in Switzerland, composes, writes lyrics, and is a passionate guitarist, singer, and a self-taught musician who has grown out of alternative and experimental rock music. He has played countless concerts both domestically and abroad in various formations. His field of activity now extends from songwriting, to theater music, audio performances, art exhibitions, writing columns, readings, and improvised instrumental music. His musical work has been recognized by the Federal Office of Culture in 1998 during the 150th anniversary celebration of the Swiss Confederation, and in 2016 as a member of the ensemble of Junges Theater Graubünden with the Swiss Theater Award. Simon Ambühl has been studying cultural sciences at the University of Lucerne since 2015.
Installé en Suisse, Simon Ambühl est un compositeur, parolier, guitariste, chanteur et musicien autodidacte qui a grandi aux sons du rock expérimental et alternatif. Il s’est produit devant les publics du monde entier au sein de diverses formations. Il a aussi d'autres cordes à son arc, comme l’écriture de chansons et de chroniques, la musique de théâtre, les prestations audio, les expositions d’art, les lectures et la musique instrumentale improvisée. Son travail de musicien a été récompensé en 1998 par l’Office fédéral de la culture à l’occasion des festivités du 150e anniversaire de la Confédération suisse. En 2016, il a remporté un Prix suisse des arts de la scène aux côtés de l’équipe du Junges Theater Graubünden. Simon Ambühl étudie les sciences culturelles à l’Université de Lucerne depuis 2015.
The historian and cultural manager has been researching the Indigenous history of North America for over a decade. In his publication Mission Sitting Bull (2016), he describes how missionaries from Switzerland attempted to convert the Sioux in the United States in the 19th century and committed cultural genocide. In his latest book, Under the Northern Lights (2020), he gives representatives of the Cree and Ojibwe from northern Ontario a chance to speak at length.
From 2009 to 2022, he worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Lucerne. Since 2020, he has managed the cultural Museum Haus zum Dolder in Switzerland, where he produced the exhibition ASKI / LAND – Indigenous Voices from Canada in 2023, in collaboration with Indigenous people who were invited to Switzerland. Since October 2022, he has been employed as a lecturer and project manager at the Lucerne University of Teacher Education. He has organized numerous cultural events (exhibitions, concerts, readings) and worked on film, music and theatre productions.
Historien et gestionnaire culturel, Manuel Menrath s’intéresse à l’histoire des Autochtones d’Amérique du Nord depuis plus d’une dizaine d’années. Son ouvrage Mission Sitting Bull (2016) porte sur la tentative de génocide culturel commis par les missionnaires suisses envoyés aux États-Unis au XIXe siècle pour évangéliser les Sioux. Dans sa dernière publication Under the Northern Lights (2020), il donne la parole aux représentants et représentantes des communautés cries et ojibwées du nord de l’Ontario.
De 2009 à 2022, il a travaillé comme chercheur et conférencier à l’Université de Lucerne. Depuis 2020, il est à la tête du Musée Haus zum Dolder en Suisse, où il a monté en 2023 l’exposition ASKI / LAND – Voix autochtones du Canada, en collaboration des Autochtones qui ont fait le voyage jusqu’en Suisse. Depuis octobre 2022, il est conférencier et gestionnaire de projets à l’Université de Lucerne de formation en enseignement.
