In today's Lunch Break, we feature a guest artist from CBC Music’s Classical 30 under 30 list for 2020. Jacob van der Sloot (23 years old) is a violist from Vancouver, British Columbia. Today, he will perform the Sarabande from Bach’s Fourth Cello Suite, transcribed for solo viola.
Jacob van der Sloot started playing violin under the instruction of his father, Michael van der Sloot, and switched to viola when he was 13. Jacob was accepted to the Juilliard school where he would earn his Bachelors degree in 2019 and is currently pursuing his Masters degree with a Teaching Assistantship at the University of Ottawa School of Music.
Jacob has established himself as one of Canada’s top young violists, participating in world-renowned programs such as the Perlman Music Program, Morningside Music Bridge, the NAC's Young Artists Program and a fellowship with the Bowdoin Music Festival. Jacob has performed chamber and solo concerts around the world in Italy, Israel, China and the USA, including his solo Carnegie hall debut in 2019 playing the Brahms E flat sonata as part of the “International Rising Stars” concert series. Jacob is an avid chamber musician as well, including a second place finish in the Fischoff Competition and loves to regularly play outreach concerts in NYC and Ottawa.
Jacob was awarded the Friends of the NAC Orchestra Award at the NAC Orchestra Bursary Competition in 2018.
Jacob van der Sloot a appris le violon à un jeune âge de son père, Michael van der Sloot, et est passé à l’alto à l’âge de 13 ans. Jacob a été accepté à l’école Juilliard, où il a obtenu son baccalauréat en 2019, et il poursuit maintenant sa maîtrise avec un poste d’assistant à l’enseignement à l’École de musique de l’Université d’Ottawa.
Jacob s’est taillé une réputation comme l’un des meilleurs jeunes altos au Canada, notamment en participant à des programmes de renommée mondiale tels que le programme de musique Perlman, Morningside Music Bridge, le Programme des jeunes artistes du CNA, et comme boursier au festival international de musique de Bowdoin. Jacob a présenté des concerts de musique de chambre et en solo en Italie, en Israël, en Chine et aux États-Unis, où il fait ses débuts en solo à Carnegie Hall en interprétant la Sonate en mi bémol de Brahms dans le cadre de la série de concerts « International Rising Stars » en 2019. Jacob est également un chambriste accompli, ayant remporté le deuxième prix au concours Fischoff, et offre régulièrement des concerts à New York et Ottawa.
Jacob s'est vu décerner le prix des Amis de l'Orchestre du CNA lors du Concours de la Bourse de l'Orchestre du CNA en 2018.
