For this week's NACO Lunch Break, join Jeremy Mastrangelo (NACO violin) and his wife Sara Mastrangelo as they perform three duos for violins by Canadian composer Violet Archer. She was born in Montreal in 1913 and passed away in Ottawa in 2000, studied with Bartók, and was long-time chair of theory and composition at the University of Alberta.
Jeremy Mastrangelo has performed regularly with NACO since the end of 2011 and was appointed as a full-time member in 2014. Previously, Jeremy was the associate concertmaster of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra from 2001 until 2011 and designated to be the orchestra's next concertmaster in 2010. During his tenure with the SSO he was a featured soloist on multiple occasions, including performances of Bach’s Concerto for two violins with Jaime Laredo, Brahms' “Double“ Concerto, the Sibelius violin concerto, and Vivaldi's Four Seasons. He has been a guest concertmaster with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Omaha Symphony, the Oregon Symphony, and the National Ballet of Canada. Prior to his work in Syracuse, Mastrangelo was co-concertmaster of the New World Symphony in Miami. Mr. Mastrangelo has been a finalist in the Julius Stulberg competition and was also the top prize winner in the National Federation of Music Clubs student auditions. In addition to his orchestral career, Mastrangelo performs frequently in solo recitals and chamber music concerts, and has been featured on the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music series on several occasions. He has also performed with the Chamber Players of Canada and Kathleen Battle as well as on NACO's MFASA series. From 2004 until 2009, he was an Affiliate Artist faculty member at Syracuse University.
With his wife Sara, who is also a violinist, Jeremy spent seven summers performing in festivals in Colorado. First, as a quartet musician at Steamboat Springs’ Strings Music Festival, and for the next six he performed with the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra, under conductor Gerhardt Zimmerman. For his final two summers he served as concertmaster for the BMF, and in that capacity soloed with the orchestra and was featured on a recording of Piazzolla’s Four Seasons. Mr. Mastrangelo holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Michigan, where he studied with William Preucil and Paul Kantor, respectively. Mastrangelo presently resides in Ottawa with his wife and two children, both of whom play piano and violin in addition to their interests in baseball, basketball, dance, art, and most anything Star Wars related.
Jeremy Mastrangelo a obtenu sa permanence à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts du Canada en 2014, après avoir joué régulièrement avec l’ensemble depuis la fin 2011. Il a été auparavant violon solo associé de l’Orchestre symphonique de Syracuse de 2001 à 2011, et désigné en 2010 pour devenir le prochain violon solo de l’ensemble. Durant ses années au sein de cette formation, il s’est produit comme soliste à de multiples occasions, notamment dans le Concerto pour deux violons de Bach, avec Jaime Laredo, le Concerto « double » de Brahms, le Concerto pour violon de Sibelius et les Quatre saisons de Vivaldi.
