The first performance of the NAC Orchestra's Northern Tour will take place at at the Nakasuk Schook in Nunavut. However, this is not the first time the National Arts Centre has visited Nunavut. For the past three years through The Music Alive Program: Nunavut NAC teaching musicians have worked with local educators, musicians, elders and community leaders to support music making, arts and culture.

NAC Orchestra musicians, guest artists and staff are thrilled to be visiting the North and participating in this cultural exchange. NAC Orchestra’s Principal Trumpet Karen Donnelly visited Iqaluit in February and will be among the 22 musicians on the Northern Tour. “The experience made a huge impact on me," said Karen.  The students in Iqaluit taught me a lot about passion and expression and commitment."

In addition to six concerts there will be 50 educational events during the 2012 Northern Tour.  These include choir workshops, ensemble performances, masterclasses and a videoconference event linking youth in Ottawa and Iqaluit via video-conference.

“This tour offers us a chance to showcase the incredible talent of Northern Canada and to celebrate its strong legacy of music-making,” said Genevieve Cimon Director of Music Education at the NAC.
