  Violin Jeffrey Dyrda

  

  Violin Jeffrey Dyrda Oakbank, Manitoba

  Canadian violinist Jeffrey Dyrda has enjoyed performing for audiences across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He has performed as principal with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, and the Verbier Festival Orchestras. Jeff was appointed Assistant Concertmaster of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2022 and joined the violin section of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the fall of 2024. 

  A dedicated chamber musician, Jeff is a former member of the Rolston String Quartet, with whom he received the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award and the First Prize of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, among others. Performance highlights included appearances at the Spoleto, Banff, Cliburn, and Norfolk festivals and on concert series in many of the world’s finest chamber music halls. 

  As an educator, Jeff’s activities include private teaching, masterclasses, and community outreach in Canada, the U.S., and abroad. He has instructed chamber music at the Virginia Tech Intensive Chamber Music Seminar, as well as at Yale University as part of the Fellowship String Quartet in Residence and has also been a provincial adjudicator for the Associated Manitoba Arts Festival. Jeff received a Fellowship from the New World Symphony in Miami Beach and is a graduate of Rice University, the New England Conservatory of Music, and McGill University.

  In the summers, Jeff greatly enjoys performing as a regular member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, and the Lakes Area Music Festival. He is also an accomplished jazz saxophonist.

  Originally from Oakbank, Manitoba, Jeff lives in Ottawa with his wife, cellist Grace An, and their son, Franklin, and plays on a 1921 violin by Romeo Antoniazzi.

  Jeffrey Dyrda est un violoniste canadien qui a joué devant les publics du monde entier, de l’Amérique, en passant par l’Europe et l’Asie. Il s’est produit comme violoniste solo dans divers orchestres, notamment l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts, les orchestres symphoniques de Winnipeg, de Jacksonville et de Kitchener-Waterloo, l’Orchestre philharmonique d’Hamilton, le New World Symphony, le Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra et le Verbier Festival Orchestra. Il a été assistant violon solo de l’Orchestre symphonique de Winnipeg en 2022, avant de se joindre à la section des violons de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts à l’automne 2024. 

  Chambriste passionné, Jeff est un ancien membre du Quatuor Rolston, avec lequel il a notamment remporté le prestigieux prix de quatuors de Cleveland et le premier prix du Concours international de quatuors à cordes de Banff. Parmi les moments forts de sa carrière, citons ses collaborations avec les festivals de Norfolk, Spoleto, Banff et Cliburn et ses participations à diverses séries de concerts donnés dans quelques-unes des plus prestigieuses salles de récital. 

  En véritable pédagogue, le violoniste offre des leçons particulières, des classes de maître et des activités de médiation culturelle au Canada, aux États-Unis et ailleurs dans le monde. Il a enseigné la musique de chambre lors du séminaire intensif de musique de chambre de Virginia Tech, ainsi qu’à l’Université Yale dans le cadre du programme de résidence pour quatuor à cordes. Il a également été membre du jury pour l’Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals. Jeff a obtenu une bourse du New World Symphony (Miami Beach) et il est diplômé de l’Université Rice, du Conservatoire de musique de la Nouvelle-Angleterre et de l’Université McGill.

  L’été, il adore jouer en tant que membre régulier de l’Orchestre de chambre du Verbier Festival, de l’Orchestre du Festival de musique de Grand Teton et de l’orchestre du Lakes Area Music Festival. Il est également un saxophoniste de jazz accompli.

   Originaire d’Oakbank, au Manitoba, Jeff Dyrda vit aujourd’hui à Ottawa avec sa femme, la violoncelliste Grace An, et leur fils Franklin. Il joue sur un violon de 1921 fabriqué par Romeo Antoniazzi.

  Violin Jessy Kim

  

  Violin Jessy Kim Vancouver/Toronto, British Columbia/Ontario

  Jessy Kim joined the violin section of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in 2024. She is a graduate of the Glenn Gould School, the University of Toronto and the Yale School of Music, and played with the Nashville Symphony for the 2024-2025 season. Jessy has studied with Ani Kavafian, Jonathan Crow, Barry Shiffman, and Paul Kantor. Originally from Seoul, South Korea, she spent her childhood in Vancouver, BC, studying violin with Lawrie Hill at the Vancouver Academy of Music. Jessy has won numerous awards and scholarships, including​ the Hnatyshyn Foundation Developing Artist Grant, the Yale Oneppo Chamber Music Prize and the Sylva Gelber Award. Her performance highlights include appearances with the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Northwest, the Vancouver Pilgrim Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Symphony, the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, the Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. 

  Jessy Kim s’est jointe à la section des violons de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts en 2024. Diplômée de l’École Glenn Gould, de l’Université de Toronto et de l’École de musique de l’Université Yale, elle a joué avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Nashville pendant la saison 2023–2024.   Principal Bass Sam Loeck

  

  Principal Bass Sam Loeck Lincoln, Nebraska

  Sam Loeck was appointed Principal Bass of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in 2024. Before joining the NAC Orchestra, he spent eight years as Principal Bass of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Born and raised in Nebraska, Sam completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics and music performance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He then earned a master’s from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Bruce Bransby and was named winner of the IU Bass Concerto Competition. Sam has performed extensively as Guest Principal Bass with the London Symphony Orchestra and been a substitute bass with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Oregon Symphony. He has also performed at several festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival, the Moritzburg Festival, the Pacific Music Festival, the Banff International String Quartet Festival, and ChamberFest West. When away from his instrument, Sam is an avid woodworker and enjoys solitude in the wilderness.

  Sam Loeck a été nommé contrebasse solo de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts en 2024. Avant de se joindre à l’Orchestre, il a été contrebasse solo de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Calgary pendant huit ans. Originaire du Nebraska, il a fait ses études de premier cycle en mathématiques et en musique (profil interprétation) à l’Université du Nebraska à Lincoln. Il a ensuite décroché une maîtrise à l’École de musique Jacobs de l’Université de l’Indiana, où il a étudié auprès de Bruce Bransby et a remporté le concours de concertos à la contrebasse. Sam s’est produit à plusieurs reprises comme contrebasse solo invité avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres et a été musicien remplaçant au sein de l’Orchestre de Philadelphie et des orchestres symphoniques de Chicago et de l’Oregon. Il a aussi participé à plusieurs festivals, dont le Festival de musique d’Aspen, le Festival de Moritzburg, le Pacific Music Festival, le Concours international de quatuors à cordes de Banff et ChamberFest West. Lorsqu’il ne joue pas de son instrument, il s’adonne à sa passion pour la menuiserie et aime s’isoler en pleine nature.

  Percussion Andrew Johnson

  

  Percussion Andrew Johnson Berwick, Nova Scotia

  Andrew Johnson joined the National Arts Centre Orchestra in September 2024 for a one-year position and has been the Principal Percussionist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since June 2019. Before joining the WSO, Andrew was Principal Percussionist of the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec. Andrew is a former fellow at the New World Symphony and has appeared professionally with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Sarasota Orchestra, and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed under conductors Christoph von Dohnanyi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Robert Spano, and Stéphane Denève and attended a variety of summer festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Center, Spoleto Festival USA, the Texas Music Festival, and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. 

  In addition to orchestral playing, Andrew enjoys performing contemporary solo and chamber music and, within this context, has worked under the guidance of Steve Reich, Dawn Upshaw, Steven Drury, and Steve Mackey. Andrew grew up in Nova Scotia and studied at Boston University with Timothy Genis and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Will Hudgins. He enjoys playing and watching hockey in his spare time and spending time with his wife, Lia, and their dog, Henry. Andrew is an endorser of Zildjian cymbals and Freer Percussion products. 

  Percussionniste solo à l’Orchestre symphonique de Winnipeg (WSO) depuis 2019, Andrew Johnson s’est joint à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts (OCNA) en septembre 2024 pour un poste d’un an. Avant de faire partie du WSO, il était percussionniste solo à l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec. Il a obtenu une bourse du New World Symphony et s’est produit professionnellement aux côtés de l’Orchestre symphonique de Toronto, de l’OCNA, de l’Orchestre de Sarasota et de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Boston. Il a été dirigé par les chefs d’orchestre Christoph von Dohnányi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Robert Spano et Stéphane Denève, et a participé à plusieurs programmes et festivals d’été (Centre de musique Tanglewood, Spoleto Festival USA, Festival de musique du Texas et Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada, entre autres).

  En plus d’être musicien d’orchestre, il se produit comme soliste de musique contemporaine et chambriste. Il a ainsi travaillé sous la direction de Steve Reich, Dawn Upshaw, Steven Drury et Steve Mackey. Il a grandi en Nouvelle-Écosse et a étudié à l’Université de Boston avec Timothy Genis ainsi qu’au Conservatoire de musique de la Nouvelle-Angleterre avec Will Hudgins. Dans ses temps libres, il aime pratiquer et regarder le hockey et passer du temps avec sa femme, Lia, et leur chien, Henry. Il joue avec des cymbales Zildjian et des instruments de Freer Percussion.
