This week, the NAC Orchestra marked 20 years of Jack Everly’s leadership as Principal Pops Conductor, an era defined by passion for bringing Broadway magic and Hollywood blockbusters to life in Southam Hall.
Jack began his journey with the NAC Orchestra during its 1999-2000 season, already an iconic figure on the pops stages of orchestras across the U.S. and in the Broadway musical theatre pit. He quickly became a familiar face at the NAC, guest conducting for five straight seasons before being named Principal Pops Conductor in 2004—a role he has held with distinction for over two decades.
Under Everly’s baton, NACO Pops programming has flourished, featuring everything from the sweeping scores of iconic film franchises to nostalgic tributes to music legends like ABBA, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Paul Simon. His ability to connect with audiences—whether through show tunes or cinematic epics—has made him a fan favourite, cherished by both musicians and concertgoers alike.
In a heartfelt tribute during a recent rehearsal, members of the NAC Orchestra expressed their gratitude, presenting Everly with two special gifts: a signed photograph and a handcrafted sculpture by Inuit artist Qavavau Ashoona from Kinngait (Cape Dorset, Nunavut). The moment was a fitting reflection of Everly’s impact, not just on the Orchestra, but on the wider Canadian music landscape.
There is no doubt that Jack Everly’s legacy will continue to echo through Southam Hall, and we look forward to his regular return as a guest conductor. His love for music and storytelling leaves an indelible mark on the NAC Orchestra’s history.
