New in 2024-25: The NACO Bursary Competition is getting a facelift!

For the first time, candidates will submit a video audition with their application which will be considered their preliminary round audition.

Only candidates selected for the semi-final round of auditions will be required to travel to Ottawa.

Both the semi-final (8 preliminary candidates) and the final (4 semi-final candidates) round auditions will be open to the public.
Preliminary round submission deadline: March 3, 2025 at 5pm ET

The NAC Orchestra Bursary Competition encourages the pursuit of excellence on the part of young Canadian instrumentalists aspiring to orchestral careers. Each year, a jury identifies deserving recipients through audition and competition.

2025 competition: Strings and harp
For the 2025 competition, applications will be accepted for musicians playing stringed instruments – violin, viola, cello, double bass – and the harp.
Public semi-final round: April 22, 2025
Public final round: April 23, 2025
Location: uOttawa School of Music’s Freiman Hall, in the Perez Music Building.
Applicants and their collaborative pianists must be available for the duration of the competition.
The NACO Bursary Competition is open to students following a recognized course of music study in preparation for a career as a professional orchestral musician. Applicants must be between 16 and 26 years of age as of the application closing date and have a connection to the National Capital Region (e.g.: grew up in Ottawa or are currently studying in Ottawa).
Wind, Brass, and Percussion
Applications for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, and timpani will be accepted for the 2026 Bursary Competition. Keep playing and check back in December 2025 to apply!
